i always thought gollums gollum was more of a gargle swallow type thing, even tolkine i think does this sound in an audio recording, but serkis makes it sound more like a cough? isnt that wrong?
This is a serious journey, not a hobbit walking-party.

To me it sounds more like a gagging noise that film-Gollum makes.

Since reading TH, I've imagined 'gollum' as a loud swallowing/ hiccupping/ gulping sound, which I think is closer to the book descriptions. I have a TH CD set where they pulled it off beautifully. I loved Andy Serkis's performance as Gollum, but as for the 'gollum' itself, the CD wins.
"A journalist once asked me what I would like my epitaph to be and I said I think I would like it to be 'He did very little harm'. And that's not easy. Most people seem to me to do a great deal of harm. If I could be remembered as having done very little, that would suit me." ~ Paul Eddington

I've always thought of it as an "Up-chucking Lunch" kind of sound.

I always imagined a gulping/swallowing king of sound. Didn't Andy Serkis say that he based his gollum on the sound of his cat coughing up a furball?

He did say it was based on his cat and having five cats myself (three of which have very long hair), I can definitely see the influence.
