And probably some of the second too know I didn't vote for that one. I just don't remember everything from those ages because so much was going on. The third age however I am pretty familiar with. I also remember bits a d pieces sometimes. I remember of aspects of certain ages but not of others.
I thought of the question while reading through the recent RR discussions, and realised I knew very little about the Second Age (I figured that was because the major storylines don't occur in that Age).
All, I mean all, the books are on my shelves. I have read them anywhere from 40 years to one month ago - read with pleasure, but not memorised. For the most part, they are my Encyclopaedia of Middle-earth, which I refer to when I want an answer. These days the answer does not stay where I need it indefinitely, so I'm not taking any silly tests, Daniel, dear.
Children, if there is anything from literature that you love right now and want to remember when you are an old gammer or gaffer, memorise it - today! Don't just save it on one of those little magic pad thingies! Memorise it. The poetry and quotations you learn now will still be with you at 60+, but it ain't certain anything after 30 will still be in there exactly when you want it - unless you're an ent - or a wizard - or otherwise exceptionally exceptional.
If I sound a bit cranky, that's nothing for you to be concerned about, and one day you just might thank me.
