Getting to know you question request thread for March - Royd Tolkien Can't Post

Hi Guys

Firstly apologies for having missed last month, RL bit me rather hard (and is continuing to do so), which has put me behind a wee bit.

Also the interview with Donato Giancola is currently on hold owing to an urgent (and exciting) commission that came in literally at the same time as our questions, he will be sending them to us as soon as he's got a free minute. Smile

So down to this months interviewee, this month we're very honoured to have Royd Tolkien.

You all know the drill, got any burning questions you'd love to ask? Then ask away!! Smile

Cheers

One by one they faded, and fell into shadow...

One book to rule them all
One book to find them
One book to bring them all
And in TORn bind them
In the land of TORnadoes...where the brilliant play

*geeky hand clapping!* [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh Goodie! Royd Tolkien is such a lovely, geeky guy!

No worries about not posting Donato Giancola's piece. There were 2 things blocking that tackle... so it's meant to be shared later :)

Now... what to do with our official TORnsib (I just dubbed him if no one else has).

Okay, my usual question: What was your favourite cartoon to watch when you were a youngster?

And another question: You have been so great to join us for our conventions and parties in the past. You always made them so much fun! This year marks TORn's 10th Anniversary in April. Would you like to come join us for our online celebration? And maybe again for our 20th?

Thanks so much!

Very neat! [In reply to] Can't Post

I have one: How does it feel to be related to a legend? I'm sure he gets asked such a question all the time, but I figured I would ask!

"It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule." Gandalf, "The Last Debate."

I am not sure of this question Kel. [In reply to] Can't Post

So you decide. 'I know the window was short (four years) but did you meet your great grandfather, and if you did do you recall anything from that?". OR: ''What was the thing that made you smile the most about your great grand father?''

I did not know he was a ranger in the ROTK! How did I miss that? Wonders never ceaseSmile.

" 'Fair lady Goldberry!' said Frodo at last, feeling his heart move with a joy that he did not understand. He stood as he had at times stood enchanted by fair elven-voices; but the spell that was now laid upon him was different: less keen and lofty was the delight, but deeper and nearer to mortal heart; marvellous and yet not strange."

Chapter VII: In the House of Tom Bombadil; FOTR's

Faerie contains many things besides elves and fays and besides dwarfs, witches, trolls, giants or dragons; it holds the seas, the sun, the moon, the sky; and the earth, and all things that are one in it: tree and bird, water and stone, wine and bread, and ourselves, mortal men, when we are enchanted."

Cool! [In reply to] Can't Post

I always go blank the second I actually get the chance to ask a burning question of anyone, but let's see if I can come up with something here:

What's your favorite color?

What do you think of the Hobbit movies so far? Do you have a favorite yet?

Elves and dragons or Cabbages and potatoes?

What is your favorite genre of literature and why?

What kind of music do you like to listen to the most?

Have you read all of your great-grandfather's Middle-earth related works?

Which of your great-grandfather's Middle-earth-related works is your favorite?

"And we find what we're made of
Through the open door
Is it fear you're afraid of?
What are you waiting for?
Love alone is worth the fight."

Thanks Kel! [In reply to] Can't Post

I look forward to both. Cool

Feel free to chose all, some or none (Wink) of the following questions:

1. If you could have been one of the 13 Dwarves in The Hobbit movies which one would you be, and why?
2. What is your favourite TV programme at the moment?
3. Who would win in a fight - the talking purse or the thinking fox?
4. How do you feel when you walk into a book store and see Tolkien on the shelf? Does it make you smile seeing people picking up books from that shelf and enjoying your great-grandfather's work?
5. Talking of books, which book could you not live without?
(6. Can I have your autograph? Well ... it's worth a shot. Angelic)

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

Ithilien Rangers are my favourite warriors in LOTR -- [In reply to] Can't Post

They (and by extension you) looked so smart in their light ranger garb and with their long bows.

My question has two parts: how did you come to be an extra in ROTK; and secondly, did you get to choose your role?

Well actually, if I may, a third question: did you get to keep any of your gear, or any artifact from the film set?

When you were growing up.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Were you aware of your great-grandfather's legacy? Did other kids ask you about the stories?

Is there a Tolkien topic that you have wanted to look into more deeply and write about your thoughts on it? If so, we'd like to hear from you for the next TORn Amateur Symposium- coming in April. Happy writing!

This is so cool, Kel. Thanks for doing it! Here is my question:

You said in an interview that you read and fell in love with LotR at 11. What is your opinion on the LotR movies overall and do you think that PJ and Co. did you grandfather justice and honored his literary legacy? Thanks so much!

thanks, gramma - [In reply to] Can't Post

- me and mrs g. have met Royd and other members of the family several times over the years. I didn't have any books with me on this occassion - it was a social 'do', nothing to do with 'Tolkien and all that'. I just found myself sitting next to Royd, and I took out a piece of paper and genuinely asked him to sign it for a friend. I wouldn't have dreamt of bothering him to autograph a book or something under those circumstances.

Next time I see Royd - if there's a next time - I think I'd ask him to sign our copy of the Tolkien Family Album - ours is signed by the authors, John and Priscilla. (and Royd's mum, too).

Smile

I'll pose some non-Tolkien questions! [In reply to] Can't Post

Wow, Kel, you do have a knack for finding very special people! Cool

My questions:
What kinds of music do you like?
Where all in the world have you visited, and do you have a most favorite/least favorite place?
If you were to take people out to dinner, where would you go, and what would you be most likely to order?
Do you have any pets?

Thanks, Kel!

For Royd: [In reply to] Can't Post

Assuming that you've seen The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, what do you think of Mr. Jackson's treatment of the story so far, and especially, how do you feel about the newly introduced character of Tauriel?
