Now that I have seen the whole series of Firefly followed by the movie Serenity, I can safely say that I am a huge fan: it's been a very long time since I've had the pleasure of watching such a quality, engaging program. Are there any fellow Browncoats lurking on these boards? I think Mal is a fantastic character, but my favourite of all the crew is Shepherd Book, the sassiest preacher in history. I regularly quote his line about "The Special Hell".
Since it's Joss Whedon, I approached this by asking myself which one I would care most about if he were to kill them off and I honestly can't pick just one. The show wouldn't be Firefly without Mal. But then you also couldn't take River out of the show and have it really be Firefly. And with River you need Simon. And then you need Kaylee and Jayne to push Simon's buttons. And to balance Jayne you need Wash and Book. And Zoe and Inara play so perfectly off of Mal to bring out his various sides.
That's the beauty of the show for me. Each of the characters helps to bring out and enrich the personality of the other characters. I couldn't possibly choose just one.
I think that I can live, though, without encountering Adam Baldwin in real life. As much as I enjoy his performances, apparently he can be a bit grating if you don't share his outlook in life.

But as others have said, the loss of any of the characters would diminish the whole. The writing and the chemistry of the actors combined to make the crew of the Serenity really feel like a family - onscreen and to the viewer. I think that's why it has so much rewatchability - like LOTR, when you finish you miss everyone so badly you just want to start over again.
Nope. Can't choose, newbie to Firefly that I am.

Can't Post
I missed Firefly when it came out, but a friend got me to watch a couple of episodes and the movie recently. Then you lot came along and, well, last weekend I found the entire series on sale and bought it and watched it all. I kept telling myself, "It's a made-for-summer-tv-movie and will end when it ends." That made it a bit easier, knowing there would be no more. It must have been hard for those of you who were watching from the beginning. Really enjoyed the show due to the characters and their interaction, the odd assortment of secondary characters, the story threads, and the mysteries of their backstories that we'll never know.
I'm so glad the Professor didn't stop at one book. Aren't you?
As was Niska, even though he was a sadist he was still a great baddie! Favourite Badger line: Oh, I'm sorry-did I give you the impression I was asking?
