The Trains of Tolkienia! Tolkienia Travel and Tourism Presents: Can't Post

Tolkienia’s 2014 Tourist Guide!

Scroll down below and then on to page 2 (which is the first reply to this post). You’ll find train maps and tickets, a personal tour with some delightful scenes and descriptions, a tall tale involving some short characters by Rembrethil, and train poems by our very own Brethil and Dame Ioreth, GTT!

TOUR TICKETS FROM FEBRUARY 27 THROUGH MARCH 7 ARE FREE!

First read through our Tour and Travel literature, then hop on the train and sit back, view the tour sites, read the Special Travel Edition story by Rem, and join in the sing-along with your fellow tourists as you all belt out songs like the “Take the ’T’ train.”

Tolkienia Travel and Tourism presents the following brochure:

"Tours of Tolkienia"
featuring a combination railway and walking survey of the
most important and beloved locations in this both deeply
historic and vibrantly new nation.

Take the “T” Train
To: “Take the “A” train” melody

You must take the T Train
To go to Bags End way up in Hobbiton
If you miss the T Train
You’ll find you’ve missed the scenic way to Hobbiton.

Hurry, get on, it’s time
Adventure awaits that bell chime. All Aboard!
Get on that T Train
To get yourself to Bags End in time.

by Dame Ioreth

Tolkienia, a nation of and for all those enriched and entranced by Professor Tolkien’s works, is the newest independent country in the western hemisphere, and the only nation ever to exist that is based entirely on a literary and cinematic body of work. Nature, art, and literature intertwine to create a harmonious whole. Both landscape and people reflect the values inherent in the Professor’s writings.

Below is Tolkienia’s official guide to the social, architectural, and culinary highlights of our nation. Begin your tour at the Travel and Tourism booth, just to the left of our main entrance:

To the left of the booth is the Tolkienia Trolley Stop, where an air-conditioned bus will deliver you to the first of the three main tour-stop locations as you begin your visit:

  • The Prancing Pony Inn (an exact replica of the original, with a fine statue of B. Butterbur to the right of the entrance). Once you have unpacked and flung open the window over the Gamgee Memorial Gardens, you can venture down for light refreshments at the Full Pint Pantry, or proceed immediately to the next Official Tour location.

  • Hop on the Trolley and travel to the Bywater Union Train station (pictured below under "Your Tour Experience") for the beginning of the official tour.

  • And then end your day with the fine dining experience at Curlew’s Pub and Restaurant.

Your Tour Experience . . .

. . . begins with your arrival at the Bywater Station, Tolkienia’s first underground train system, home of the Relentlessly Tolkien Fascinated railway, known as the RTF Underground. Tolkienia’s trains were first envisioned by our own Ruxendil Thoorg. Engraved over the front door of the building is Ruxendil’s original poem:

These tracks go ever on and on, out from the platform RTF,
Now far ahead the rails have gone, I'll take my seat here on the left.
I will rest my weary feet, until my destination fair
Where many paths and errands meet, I'll seek my bold adventures there.

As you walk through the door, you will see bulletin boards and kiosks, all festooned with colorful ads and posters.

To the right, behind one of the pillars, is a small post office branch where you can purchase local post cards and commemorative stamps.

When you are ready to choose your tour, simply follow the instructions below:

First, study the 2 railway maps:

The above ground map shows the location of each underground line in relation to the town above.

https://picasaweb.google.com/...wU_g?feat=directlink

The second map shows the actual underground lines, and the major stops.

(For full size map, click on the link) https://picasaweb.google.com/...wU_g?feat=directlink

Next, choose your tour from the brochures that are posted in the kiosk near the ticket windows.

There is a separate ticket window for each journey, facilitating your ability to choose your desired tour without any confusion.

Lastly, pick up your tickets at any of the four ticket destination windows, depending on the tour you have chosen. For the inaugural period of February 27 through March 7, all tour tickets are free!

Take your seat on the green bench near the entrance and wait for your tour guide to arrive and escort you to the correct train. Tour guides can be distinguished by their gold brocade weskits and feathered caps. You will proceed down the automatic stairway (nicknamed the Thorin Bucket) to reach the boarding area. https://picasaweb.google.com/...wU_g?feat=directlink

Here is a sample train ticket:

During the train portion of your tour, you will be treated to refreshments in our dining car, such as the delicate and creamy seedcake-and-strawberry shortcake, prepared by train originator, chef, and celebrated local bard, Ruxendil Thoorg.

As you travel between stations, you can read your complimentary copy of the adventure story by our local reporter, Rembrethil, posted on page 2 (the reply to this page), and sing along and tap your foot to Ioreth’s and Brethil's finest tunes.

Let the Trains begin!
Below, you can take one of our most popular tours, right here on the boards.

Tour No. 1 Tolkienia House and Garden Tour
This, and all other tours are clearly described in the station’s brochures, and of course on our website at www.TolkieniaTours.uk.rtf.edu

  • First, board the trolley, which will take you to the Bywater Union Station, located between Bywater Road and Woodham Ferrers Road.

  • For this particular tour pictured below, purchase a ticket for the Tolkienia House and Garden tour and take the Ruxendil Express, connecting to the Smaug and Dale line, back to the Ruxendil, and ending on the East branch of the Ring Circle.

  • As you step aboard, wander through each car and settle in to your favorite. Here are two of the many choices available:

The Hobbit Car, featuring Specialty Window Shades https://picasaweb.google.com/...wU_g?feat=directlink

The Hobbit Car, shades up. This photo shows the northeast Smials area out the windows. https://picasaweb.google.com/...wU_g?feat=directlink

The Smaug Car showing rows: https://picasaweb.google.com/...wU_g?feat=directlink

The Smaug car, seat detail: https://picasaweb.google.com/...wU_g?feat=directlink

Then sit back, relax and enjoy the tour!

1.
On your left is Faramir House, named after the beloved and intrepid Lord of the Rings character. The house is presently owned by Ecthelion and Morwen Riverdale, but may be going on the market in the next month or so. Ec and Morrie host an afternoon tea every second Thursday at 4:00 P.M. in the sunroom off the back garden for up to 15 visitors at a time. Tickets are available at the Tolkienia Chamber of Commerce office located in City Hall (just south of Monument square, off Celeborn St.)

2.
Speaking of City Hall, passengers will disembark at this point, and stroll across the lawn toward the front entrance. This fine old building was constructed in the earliest days of Tolkienia, and is one of the the finest examples of Dwarvish stonework to be seen in the entire country.

3. https://picasaweb.google.com/...wU_g?feat=directlink
Next, wander across to Tolkienia Monument Square, read the inscribed poetry, climb to the pinnacle of Orthanc, and take the Tolkien House Tour.

4.
Hop back on the train as it travels through the mysterious regions of the Ents. A brief stop will be made at the Entwife museum, and then the train proceeds past the Edible Lamppost Dispensary, where you will disembark and proceed onto the Ruxendil Line Train, and then onto the Ring Circle line which runs around the outskirts of Eastfarthing.

5. During this stretch, sing along with Dme. Ioreth and her sisters, read your complementary copy of our Wandering Reporter’s exciting travel adventure, and venture over to the dining car for Ruxendil’s shortcake and Longbottom tea! Below is one of Ioreth’s most popular songs. More train shantys by Brethil and Ioreth are included on the second page along with Rembrethil’s adventure story.

6.
Next we will visit he E.I.P. (Ernil i Pheriannath) Memorial Library, a fine Victorian building full of quiet nooks and cozy back rooms. A favorite with literary locals, schoolchildren, scholars, and anyone who just wants to curl up with their preferred novel, mystery story, or the most recent Tolkienia Times.

7. The Bodelian Shuttle will then ferry you over to dinner at Curlews. Music and Dancing is available far into the evening at the Pub and at many other local establishments.

Relax for the rest of your evening as you settle in to your cosy, quiet room with it’s own fireplace and hanging teakettle.

Enjoy your stay, and please come again soon!

An Underground Experience

Beards will be the death of me!! Why?

It all started a few days ago, in a place not far away. I was eating a delicious bowl of Legolas' Loops for breakfast, when suddenly, one of the Hobbit press boys from the Times arrived. When I say 'arrived', I actually mean 'crashed', and through my garden window!!

'Confound and confusticate you Hob Hornfoot!! What is the meaning of this!?'

'Shhh!!! Can't be talkin' now. Not safe!'

With that cryptic message,(And without an explanation, apology, or so much as a by-your-leave) he leapt away with a final flying kick. Looking down, I saw that he had pushed a small note into my hand. Cracking the seal, I found that it was a note from my Tyrannical Editor (Meant in the nicest way, of course!) with my next assignment, a review of the new Tolkienia Underground. Turning it over, I made out the word 'Confidential' written on the back--a word whose meaning Master Hornfoot must have carried to an extreme. Sighing, I set to cleaning up the shattered glass, preparing for the next day, but nothing could have prepared me for what happened next!!

I arrived outside Woodridings Station, and was just about to descend to the platform, when I was jostled by a short figure, bearded, with dark glasses and wearing a trench coat, top hat, and boots.

'Hob? Is that you?

'Shh!! Talk lower.'

I rolled my eyes and asked another question.

'Why are you here, and just what are you wearing?'

'Well, I'm here to help you! I talked to the editor: "All right,” she says to me "give 'im a hand with this one, then we'll see 'bout you becoming a reporter." Seeing as this is a "secret" mission, I thought as we needed disguises. Here, I brought you one!’

He tried to shove a bundled disguise, which smelled strangely of ham, into my arms, but I refused as politely as I could. Seeing that I would not be rid of him easily, I resolved to finish my report in spite of my motley companion, and we went down to the Underground.

The ticket agent looked at Hob queerly, and wasn't totally convinced when he explained:

'I'm a Dwarf!'

But she sold us the tickets in spite of his obvious fabrication.

Once seated, I set to examine the car, after telling Hob to keep still and quiet. Soon the conductor came to check our tickets, and I managed to strike up a conversation. He told me that this train was the finest 'Steisel' locomotive east of the Sea. Fed by the clean power of a newly discovered ore, 'stiesel', the engine was able to run without any noxious smokes or fumes. He was unable to explain the exact science behind the engine, a trade secret held close by the Dwarves of the Moria Mining Concern, but I heard no complaints about the time made or any horrid smells. I had noticed that Hob had been quiet, but it wasn't something I'd enjoy for too long. He must have gotten the idea that a 'real reporter' would be out there, asking the tough questions, and so he began his interrogation of the poor conductor.

'Conductor, all this talk of ironmongery and whatch-ma-whosits is nice, but there is one thing the plain folks aboard want to know!'

'And what is that Master...Uh...Dwarf?'

'I hear that contraption on the front is called a "cow-catcher". Now where exactly are the cows you plan to catch? And by what rights do you see it fit to catch other peoples' cows?’

Elbowing him into silence, I made my apologies, and the conductor moved on, slightly befuddled.

I remonstrated violently with Hob, before sending him off to interview a few passengers, with an injunction to keep his questions civil and his nose out of trouble. Free to pursue my work, I moved along the cars, asking opinions of the new rail system and testimonials of their experiences. I was making good time, when a loud disruption brought my unwanted partner back to mind.

Somehow, even with his terrible disguise, Hob had managed to be mistaken for a Dwarf executive from the Moria Mining Concern, and he found himself in the middle of a company board meeting. Unwilling to let such opportunity pass, and too slow to realise the danger, he had settled into the missing CDO's seat (Chief Dwarf Officer).

The shouts had been occasioned when one side of Hob's false-beard had detached during the rigorous comparison of beard length that inevitably ensues whenever Dwarves meet. Trying to provide an explanation to the astonished assembly, he only succeeded in tripping over his feet, as well as his tongue, and exposing his hairy toes to display. This had occasioned the loud shouts I had heard.

Bursting in on a scene of chaos, I was just in time to witness the end of Hob's final, foolish attempt to save the situation, as he soberly declared:

'And so you see, my fellow Dwarves, my father was a dwarf, but my mother was a hobbit, but I am okay with that now.'

Stunned into silence, the assembly had been given enough pause, to allow me to grab Hob by that silly beard of his and drag him away before any further harm was done.

I never did get that article finished. When we came to the next stop, I stepped off and walked home, pulling Hob behind me.

And so, that is the reason you see this story in print, instead of the promised review. It's part humour, part apology to the MMC (really, corporate espionage was the furthest thing from our minds!), and part warning to any young pressmen who look to move up in the newspaper world.

Take my advice, ride the Underground, but leave the disguises at home.

The Tolkienia Choo Choo
by Dame Ioreth

Pardon me, folks,
Is this the Tolkienia Choo Choo?
Track 29... Seems there's a line!

I can afford
to board the Tolkienia Choo Choo
I've got my books
But I’m getting some looks.

We'll leave the Tolkienia Station 'bout a quarter to Four
Read The Hobbit through and then your in Erebor
Dinner with the Master
Nothing could be faster
Than to have your second breakfast on the trail

When you hear the whistle blowin' 9 to the bar
Then you'll know the Fellowship is not very far
Frodo, Sam and Gandalf,
Men, a dwarf, a blond elf,
Woo Hoo, Rivendell is where you are.

There's gonna be
A certain party at the station
Leather and mail,
A wish his quest doesn't fail
He's gonna try
Ev'ry time we pick the book up to read
So Tolkienia Choo Choo
Take me where I can read
Tolkienia Choo Choo
Take me where I can read

Fantasy Junction (to the tune of Conjunction Junction)
by Brethil

Fantasy Junction, what's your function?
Fantasy Junction, how's that function?
I got three favorite books
That get my escapism done.
Fantasy Junction, what's their function?
I got "far", "green", and "country",
They'll get you some looks.

Fantasy Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up two dimensions and making 'em run right.
Miruvor and honey, lembas and butter, peas and rice.
Bilbo that's nice!
Dirty but happy, digging and scratching,
Losing his shoe and a button or two.
He's poor but honest, sad but true,
Boo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!

Fantasy Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up phrases and clauses that balance, like:
'Out of the frying pan and into the fire.'
'The Erebor Quest was a small one,
But the fates were so large and so dire.'
'Let's go up to the mountains,
Or down to the sea.'
You should always say "thank you",
Or at least say "please".

Fantasy Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up ideas and phrases and clauses
In Bilbo's sentences like:
"In the mornings, when I am usually wide awake,
I love to take a walk through the gardens and down by the lake,
Where I often see a duck and a drake,
And I wonder as I walk by
Just what they'd say if they could speak,
Although I know that's an absurd thought."

Fantasy Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up minds and making 'em function.
Fantasy Junction, how's that function?
I like tying up worlds and phrases and landscapes.
Fantasy Junction, watch that function.
I'm going to get you there if you're very insightful.
Fantasy Junction, what's your function?
I'm going to get you there if you're very insightful.
Fantsasy Junction, what's your function?
I'm going to get you there if you're very insightful.

Official Tolkienia Times Special Report: This just in! [In reply to] Can't Post

TOLKIENIA GETS NEW UNDERGROUND SYSTEM

"In a hole in the ground there lived Nahar. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was an underground system, and that means comfort" declared the Mayor of Tolkienia as she today unveiled the new underground system and rail service. The underground is now open to all residents of Tolkienia.

The new trains (named Nahar) have a futuristic design, demonstrating a new era for public transport. The line boasts 23 new stations, affectionately named from the life and times of our Founding Father. Spread across Tolkienia, the 23 new stations have opened up Tolkienia to a whole new type of tourism.

The underground was built after the Government was awarded funding to Transport for Tolkienia to improve the tube service across the town. Costing up to £1m per carriage, the new creation, designed by RTF (Relentlessly Tolkien Fascinated) Underground, has one main focus - efficiency. Its carriages are designed to hold more people than today's modern metro trains and is said to be 30% more energy efficient than current models, since it runs Tolkienia's very own fuel source "stiesel".

With sweaty Dwarves dreading the thought of a busy rush hour train journey, Nahar offers full air conditioning across all of its spacious carriages. Covered in mithril, the trains have been described as "unsinkable". All customers will also be able to access live travel information and use TheOneRing.neta to plan their social life while on the move. WiFi on the Tube is part of how we are improving services for our customers. Everything has been designed to include all the comforts of home (even for Hobbits).

The carriages are 20 per cent brighter, in order to prevent Orcs from causing delays on the line. However, the trains are driverless and may alarm some travelers. Free glasses of miruvor and chunks of lembas bread are hoped to put customers at ease on the train.

Mayor Ethel had this to say after her first journey:

"We wanted people to have a really personal experience, sitting in the seats of a brand new, futuristic train. This is an exciting time for Tolkienia, and there are many more projects in the pipeline for Tolkienia."

Written by DanielLB - a relentlessly fascinated Tolkienite, a Talking Purse archaeologist, and the Weather and Community Events reporter for Tolkienia.

In my mind, this is all actually real somewhere. [In reply to] Can't Post

I just haven't managed to find it on a map yet...

I can't believe how much work y'all have put into this! Just... *jaw drop*... speechless... the tickets... the trains... everything...

Why can this not all be real somewhere?

"I had forgotten that. It is hard to be sure of anything among so many marvels. The world is all grown strange. Elf and Dwarf in company walk in our daily fields; and folk speak with the Lady of the Wood and yet live; and the Sword comes back to war that was broken in the long ages ere the fathers of our fathers rode into the Mark! How shall a man judge what to do in such times?"

"As he ever has judged. Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves and another among Men. It is a man's part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house."

Well, if you use Tolkien's understanding of such things... [In reply to] Can't Post

...Tolkienia is simply a "subcreation", and the "real" place exists - elsewhere.

And that may be a comforting thought. Heart
