"Let the Hobbit Happen" - if u were there, would you post about it plz? Can't Post

Because I wasn't - but after seeing the Appendices footage of PJ at a TORn party? with a whole group of people chanting "Hobbit, Hobbit" was hoping people who were paying attention (for those of us who weren't) would be willing to share what it was like, e.g. when the first rumblings of demands to film the Hobbit started, what the online chatter was like, and how you felt about the early rumblings and first knew that there actually would be a film or films. And how soon after LOTR did the demands for the Hobbit begin?

As a kindness to folks like me who figured LOTR was it and if the Hobbit were ever filmed it would be "a little kiddie movie" so ended up missing a lot. But I wish I had been there all along and would like to know a little of what that felt like to be part of.

That was 2004 [In reply to] Can't Post

and 10 years ago is a bit hazy. I remember that when, mostly one by one, the stars of the film came on stage to address the crowd and we went nuts, then what seemed like the entire crew who had turned up to the Oscars plus those cast members came on stage and PJ spoke to the crowd, and we chanted for Fran (though I don't remember if she actually did speak to us?), then everyone held up their Oscar statuettes and it looked like a wall of gold on stage. PJ did speak to us about contacting New Line "politely!" and asking them to 'make the Hobbit happen'. There had already been comments on TORN using that phrase and it was a thrill to see PJ repeating it.

There was a loooooong wait before word came out that The Hobbit would be made. Then it became a morass of issues - not least the stoush between PJ and New Line, and New Line's head vowng that PJ would never make another film with them. When it was evident that the path was clear for the new movie (as we thought then - one film), a meme on TORN was 'waiting for the green light' (of the film). A handful of posters changed their avatars or had a footer image of a green light while we waited, and waited, and waited. News that the two (then) movies had a green light for pre-production was huge!

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

I have a little info collected for the TORn Mathom-house history wiki [In reply to] Can't Post

None of it public yet because it's really raw and needs adopting by someone willing to work on it. :-)

It will be way easier for me to just do some copy and pasting without making links clickable. But first, I will say that TORn Staffer MrCere was doing some research on this topic last year and I found a bunch of stuff for him and he shared some info with me. The info he shared was via private email and I don't share anything that someone gives me in private email without their permission. Before I would put it on the wiki or in a post here, I'd have to seek his permission and that's not on my agenda to do at the moment. :-)

However, I think it would be totally appropriate for you to PM (not sure if he checks PMs here) or email him to see if he is able to share what he knows or has found out. It's highly possible, even likely, that other people here will be able to provide what he would provide.

Okay... below is the raw data I've collected:

APRIL 2, 2004
http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2004/04/02/4389-the-ruse-is-up-let-the-hobbit-happen/
"Okay, okay. So we played an April Fools on you twice yesterday…but it was fun! And it was for a good cause. You see, while the ‘fake’ press release yesterday was a surprise to many, we all deep down want The Hobbit to Happen! (No offense Paul Anderson, we really want Peter Jackson to do it though!) Thus, we are starting the ‘LET THE HOBBIT HAPPEN‘ letter-writing campaign."

http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2007/09/16/23957-celebriels-dragoncon-report-making-the-hobbit-happen-2/
A petition signature campaign was led by Lynn Machie (LithQ) to rally fan support. On September 22, 2006 the petition, over 2000 pages containing over 62,000 signatures, was delivered to MGM and New Line Cinema.

OMG - you were at that party! Thank you! [In reply to] Can't Post

In the footage I couldn't understand what PJ was saying - I kind of thought he was telling everyone to be quiet to be honest, that that was supposed to be some sort of Oscar party.

"a meme on TORN was 'waiting for the green light' (of the film). A handful of posters changed their avatars or had a footer image of a green light while we waited, and waited, and waited."

I love this, wish I had been part of it, even tho it must have awful having so much depending on these big companies sorting themselves out (over a story that IMO belongs to the world, really, now). This board must have exploded when the green light news came - sigh, I missed it, but it must have felt great for all those who hung in there.

Magpie - many many thanks! [In reply to] Can't Post

It's a great starting point (and I saved off the file!Evil especially for someone like me who missed so much and then utterly fell in love with these films and now wants to know EVERYTHING. It's actually frightening to watch the Appendices because I read other articles about the stuff PJ dealt with and there were just so many issues, it's a miracle PJ kept pushing onward w. all the staff.

And I'm personally hoping the Hobbit journey doesn't end as abruptly as all that, in that I'm fantasizing that PJ will do, possibly, an LOTR/Hobbit re-cut collector version, even tho he made that comment to a fan (I think during the fan event) that some of the footage we've never seen is not so great in quality - but as the fan said "we don't mind". When PJ has had a break and doesn't have to worry about a theater release and has had time to rest and might think about tinkering and re-editing.

Fans who held on through all the ups and downs of getting the Hobbit filmed IMO deserve huge credit and it would be nice to see a section on an EE that targets the fan community - maybe your research and others could be really useful for something like that.

Just think if right now you started "Let the Children of Hurin Happen" [In reply to] Can't Post

and then imagine waiting XX years before a glimmer
of hope emerges and then it goes through on again off again spurts and then looks dead and then a period of time of no news and then a turn of events and suddenly we are talking director choices, actors etc. It seems sooo long before it happens but looking back it all is passing too quickly in some sense. Right now, I want the DOS EE but will have to be patient another 9 months.

Are u nervous about the DOS EE? [In reply to] Can't Post

Am wary of getting excited myself - as a Thorin fan I got a lot of what I wanted anyway, esp. the Bree scene (even tho I knew it had been filmed there is no way to tell how PJ will edit things).

But after the "13 minute AUJ additions" for me not sure DOS will be as enriched as I might hope, tho there are minutes of the AUJ additions that I cherish (Bofur's song, Bilbo/Thorin at Rivendell).

the emotion - thank you for sharing! [In reply to] Can't Post

Just the little of these I read so far - really brings home what the FANS went through. And what I missed - tho maybe for me it was for the best in some ways. Saving the links off too. (It would be curiousness about the RA "casting controversy" that would draw me back to ME, ultimately - and since it was the fans who were discussing casting I guess I should credit the fans more than the press!).

Love this post from 2010:

"That in two years and two months, we will see Smaug the Golden in all of his cinematic glory."

Well, the timeline probably isn't exact now, but hafta think Smaug, voice and body, is more than anyone could have imagined.

I didn't even mob Bruce Hopkins at the end. And it wasn't me who shouted "Down in front!" to the idiots who kept walking in front of the TV in the Green Dragon. We did get kicked out of the main auditorium during the show but I still say that was overkill on the bouncer's part.

I was a little disappointed with only 13 minutes added to the film, but I loved the appendices and I'm hoping we'll get to see both more film time, and lots more behind the scenes stuff for DOS. And I really, really wish they would give us more photos and info about the props and costumes. They're so beautiful and detailed - would love to see more of them.

It really is a testament to Jackson's devotion to this work [In reply to] Can't Post

I did sign the petition on April 4, 2004 at petition to Let the Hobbit Happen. There were over over 63,000 signatures collected and taken. My Signature Confirmation for The Hobbit Petition was #2433.

It was a very frustrating and confusing time. Lots of posturing, legal questions, I couldn't keep up with all of it. Until, finally, in October 2010, The Hobbit finally got green-lit for production.

Seriously, it was Peter Jackson's determination that made these films possible... not just him being the filmmaker. So I will never judge or complain about any changes or additions he has made to his version of telling this story. He earned the right to tell it his way, imho :)

Yes please a costume section! [In reply to] Can't Post

So many of us would like more details - I always want to wander among the costumes, just running my hands over them, looking at the seaming and piecing and materials, wanting to watch the leatherworkers weave the beautiful vambraces and belts, wanting to know how the studding is attached.

There wasn't nearly enough of that in the Appendices, I'd like a whole section for each dwarf costume with details. And I was shocked at reading an article where RA was talking about how heavy the "full" Thorin costume was - but IMO it's gorgeous, perfect for the character, striking. All the dwarf costumes are wonderful - and for an elf prince I liked the use of a leaf motif for Legolas, and of course Thranduil is just elegant w his robes.

Well, they need SOMETHING for the TABA EE, why not super details about the costumes and sets and weapons?

That was my first Moot! [In reply to] Can't Post

I had been on the message boards for a couple of years, but never mustered the courage to actually meet anyone. But I got a ticket to the party, and flew out to LA. i was so worried that I would never meet anyone and would spend the entire party alone. But fortunately I ran in to a few TORN-folk at the hotel, and I had the most marvelous time.

The moment when the cast and crew came on stage was something I'll never forget. All those statues - it was a wall of gold. And they were just as happy to be there as we were to see them. Another moment that stands out is when Jed Brophy, Sala Baker and Bruce Hopkins did a Haka for all of us. Ataahua was so proud of her country, and we just went nuts iwth cheering and shouting.

I have a document saved that I copy/pasted from the message boards after we all got back - all of our party memories. I'll look for it, and post it if I can find it. I have a great picture too of all of us TORN-folk in our party duds.
