I wonder... [In reply to] Can't Post

... whether it will work as a moving emotional shock that suddenly key dwarves WILL die (and potentially an Elf who is not so unpopular with the audience as some here might think imho) or whether this might be a change of tone people won't buy. This will be one of the puzzles PJ has to solve for TABA imo.

I am sure it will be a joy and excitement to witness and judge.

I'll take a shot [In reply to] Can't Post

1. Bard leading the Men; Thranduil for the Wood-elves; Dain and his Dwarves (with Thorin in reserve); Azog leading the main assault of Orcs; Bolg in charge of the final attack. Additional support from Wargs, Bats, Eagles and Beorn.

2. Massive battle to claim Erebor and secure the region.

3. The third act of The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

4. Principally in the valley between the south-west and south-east spurs of Erebor.

5. The smart thing would be to stick to the book, adjusting as needed. The Dwarves and other foot-soldiers meet the Orcs in the valley while archers assault Azog's force from the spurs. Goblins sneak over the spurs under the cover of a horde of Bats to attack the Men and Elves; Thorin leads his companions through the Front Gate, rallying the armies of the Free Peoples while the Eagles arrive and disrupt the goblins and Orcs on the ridges. Azog is slain (either by Thorin or Dain) as Bolg leads his reinforcements into the valley. Bolg and his bodyguard charge into the Dwarves, killing Fili and Kili and mortally-wounding Thorin. Beorn arrives and turns the tide, crushing Bolg.

Perfect ... except for one slight thing [In reply to] Can't Post

I've always imagined Kili and Fili dying as a result of them defending a mortally wounded Thorin - which is what happens in the book.

So I agree with everything you say, just changing the last part and make Bolg wound Thorin, at which point his nephews will step in to try and save him.

Otherwise, I'm all for itWink

Relating the DG plot to BOFA [In reply to] Can't Post

How will Jackson justify the (presumed) absence of the remaining white council members at the BOFA? This idea really isn't developed in the book either but given that the orc army came from DG, it would seem to make sense that more of the white council would travel north to help deal with it. We know that Gandalf will get there but does that mean he leaves before the action on DG is done? If so how does he get Radagast's staff since it is logical that Radagast will need it. While they weren't in agreement on this whole scheme of Gandalf's in the beginning, it seems like they can't legitimately claim to be guardians of middle-earth if they let thousands of orcs attack their allies, unless they have a good reason for not all showing up.

I'd like to see waves [SPOILERS] [In reply to] Can't Post

No! I don't mean that I want a scene were they all do the wave!

I mean that there should be waves of armies.
It can start out as elves + men vs dwarves,
then dwarves + elves + men vs goblins + wargs,
then dwarves + elves + men vs goblins + wargs + bats,
then dwarves + elves + men + skin changers vs goblins + wargs + bats,
then dwarves + elves + men + skin changers + eagles vs goblins + wargs + bats,

and the advantage can swing back and forth as each new reinforcement swings the tide of battle.

With the actual battle actually being shown instead of "konking out" of it beside Bilbo, there should be spectacular air battles and all kinds of cool stuff. I don't think the epic apocalyptic stakes should rival ROTK but I do think the spectacle could. I also think the back and forth of it could be more entertaining and that there should be more losses for the "good guys" who should not so easily clean it up at the end.

I really do like Tauriel [In reply to] Can't Post

but if 3 top dwarves bite it in this fight, then we need to see some elves and humans get taken out ... and they need to be main-ish characters. There should be heavy losses if Thorin dies. Maybe a chunk or batallion can go down together and Tauriel's soft spot for the dwarves could play a role. There could even be a dark moment right after some of them go down together where the audience really believes that they might lose all-together.

I am not against Tauriel living, but I don't think she should have "feminine cinematic armor". If a girl fights alongside men then she might die alongside men too. At the very least, her life should hang in the balance.

With the dragon dead, the rest of the White Council is more interested in either searching Dol Guldur for prisoners to free or any secrets that Sauron left behind, or tracking Sauron's movements and maybe preventing him from reaching Mordor.

I'm not convinced [In reply to] Can't Post

That the Eagles will save the day in this one. Reason been that people might think it a bit repetitve if the Eagles save the day again, the 3rd time. They will probably be there but maybe not the decisive factor. Possibly Beorn or Bard will be.

The way Tolkien described the battle, the Free Peoples were still in danger of losing even after the Eagles joined the fray. It was Beorn who broke the back of the assault when he killed Bolg of the North.
