Screencap of the Day: Sam to the Rescue Can't Post

Shelob captures Frodo, but fails to drag her prey into her lair as Sam arrives to Frodo’s rescue.

1. Sting and the Phial of Galadriel appear on the screen before Sam does. What do you make of this little detail? It definitely looks cool, but do you feel there might also be a finer meaning to it? If so, what?
2. The look on Sam’s face! What kind of emotions can you read out of it?
3. In the book, Sam charges right at Shelob. In the film, Sam calls out to her first (“Let him go, you filth!”), after which they stand face-to-face for a few seconds before the fight begins. What thoughts does this scene invoke in you?

Sam's time with Sting and the Phial. [In reply to] Can't Post

I like it and better that Sam found the sword and the phial rather than the orcs. The sword and the phial were both gifted to Frodo from Bilbo and Galadriel and both instructed him with words of wisdom for their use.
When a person holds a light out in front, it does make it hard to see who is behind that light, especially in a dark space. With the sword the reflection of the light on it made it easier for it to stand out before Sam came into view. No only that it gave Sam protection and made his path ahead to finding Frodo easier.

2. The look on Sam’s face! What kind of emotions can you read out of it?
Sam has spoken and the spider turns around and spots another potential meal. When your best friend's life hangs in the balance and you made a promise not to leave him, this is the time you don't mess with Sam no matter how big or small the obstacle.

3. In the book, Sam charges right at Shelob. In the film, Sam calls out to her first (“Let him go, you filth!”), after which they stand face-to-face for a few seconds before the fight begins. What thoughts does this scene invoke in you? \

Just how alone Sam is, stuck in this circular cave with a giant spider who has cobwebbed Frodo and now has turned its attention onto Sam. Yet Sam bravely holds the phial in front of him letting its light shine, believing that what works for Frodo will work for him. He is a hobbit with a cause.

Exactly. You can sense fear in him, but it's no match to his determination.

He sure is! Smile

From the moment Sam returns to find Frodo [In reply to] Can't Post

after discovering Gollum's treachery, Sam's strength just shines from then on until the end of the film. I thought Sean Astin was excellent in this last portion of the story.

He looks rather disgusted (who wouldn't?!) and very fearless. Between Sting, the Phial and his determination, Shelob doesn't know what she's in for!
