Short Film 'The Voorman Problem' starring Martin Freeman nominated for Academy Award Can't Post

One of the very best aspects of the Academy Awards is the ability of the nominations and forthcoming telecast to shine a light on smaller films
that would perhaps otherwise go unnoticed by the general public. Such is the case with a film that Martin Freeman shot a couple of years ago
called The Voorman Problem. Directed by Mark Gill and also starring Tom Hollander, Simon Griffiths and Elisabeth Gray, the film has been nominated for Best Live Action Short at the 86th Annual Academy Awards. We would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Gill and his cast and crew.

The film will be touring in cinemas with the Oscar Shorts starting January 31st, and will appear on iTunes on February 28th. Visit the official site for the film by clicking here.

Thank you to Ringer Katering for telling us about this!

Official Synopsis:
Doctor Williams is called in to examine the enigmatic Mr Voorman, a prisoner with a peculiar affliction: he believes he is a god. The doctor must decide on the sanity of Mr Voorman: is he a faker or a lunatic? Diagnose him insane and they can ship him off to the asylum. But before making a decision, the doctor has several questions in relation to Voorman's claim: why would a god choose to be straitjacketed in a prison, is there a way he can validate his boast and what has any of this got to do with Belgium?

This sounds like an interesting and entertaining short film [In reply to] Can't Post

"The Voorman Problem" seems like it would be one of the better episodes of The Twilight Zone. I would watch it.

What an intriguing premise [In reply to] Can't Post

I think I'd be interested even if Martin Freeman weren't one of the stars.

As an interesting side note, I believe Tom Hollander was considered for the role of Bilbo.

Congrats to all involved [In reply to] Can't Post

Will keep my eye out for the Oscar Shorts viewings.

Have an idea relating to the world of JRR Tolkien that you would like to write about? If so, the Third TORn Amateur Symposium will be running in the Reading Room in April, 2014. We hope to see you there!

I can't wait to see this [In reply to] Can't Post

And I find it really intriguing as a concept. All of the Oscar nominated shorts are playing in a local art cinema here before the Oscars air in Feb. I think I will go see them all.

I find the subject of Voorman most fascinating.

Ah - thanks HS! [In reply to] Can't Post

I will have a look around this week for screens in my area. We shall have to compare notes if we both manage to see it!
