As depicted in the Hobbit, Balin just doesn't seem to be the type to want to re-take any kind of ancient hall oe become Lord of Moria. OK, perhaps if it was believed Moria were totally empty of all orcs. But I can't imagine him initiating anything like that. Boyens said we needed to care about Balin, and we do, but my mind utterly rejects the Balin I know from the Hobbit being in that tomb - doesn't compute.

But Thorin actually dyes his hair. in a special Dwarven lotion, it's very potent. And he always keeps a bottle in his knapsack, on any journey.
