AUJ Chapter of the Week (CHOW) Sign-up for January & February 2014! Can't Post

After a brief pause for the release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, we have decided to restart Chapter of the Week (CHOW) where we left off.

Chapter of the Week (CHOW) is an ongoing discussion on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. For the months of January and February, we have 8 CHOWs. Each host will make one thread each week on their chosen film chapter (ideally during the weekend - anytime between Friday to Sunday inclusive).

The weeks and chapters that need leaders are as follows:

13. Weekend of January 10th - A Troll Hoard
14. Weekend of January 17th - The Hill of Sorcery
15. Weekend of January 24th - Warg-scouts
16. Weekend of January 31st - The Hidden Valley
17. Weekend of February 7th - Moon Runes
18. Weekend of February 14th - The Defiler
19. Weekend of February 21st - The White Council
20. Weekend of February 28th - Over Hill

Please do not post a CHOW thread unless you have already signed up, or notified cats16 or DanielLB first. We will return to the extended edition of the film in the future. In the meantime, all chapter titles refer to the theatrical version only. AUJ CHOW should finish sometime in May, and then we plan on going straight into DOS CHOW.

Volunteers choose their chapter on a first-come-first-serve basis, so get in there quickly if you want to host a particular chapter. If you have already hosted a CHOW, you are more than welcome to volunteer again, but be sure to give everyone an opportunity to host first. Just respond to this thread with which chapter you would like to host. If you miss this sign-up, don't worry! There are plenty of chapters left. If in doubt which chapter is which, consult your DVD (hopefully you own it, or PM either cats16 or DanielLB.)

Each person will be assigned a DVD chapter, seen above. For your chosen chapter, we will leave the discussion up to you! It really is an open book, so we don't want to restrict anyone. Some suggestions might be:

- The use of CGI in the scene (or even HFR, if you can remember what it was like)
- The score and the soundtrack
- The props, sets and landscapes in the scene
- The costumes we see in the film
- The actors and acting
- General scene setups
- Differences from book
- A comparison with animated film
- A comparison with The Lord of the Rings films

You can ask as little or as many questions as you like. Have fun, and enjoy!

You can also choose screencaps for your part, and we recommend this website. Magpie has provided an excellent tutorial in image posting on TORn that can be found here. Please also make sure all screencaps stay within TORn's Term of Service (see 2.20).

When posting your thread, please include "Chapter of the Week: [Insert Chapter Title Here]", so that they are easy to find on a rather fast moving board.

We hope you enjoy all the discussions.

Here are the links to the previous CHOW discussions:

1. Prologue
2. My Dear Frodo
3. Old Friends
4. An Unexpected Party
5. Dinner Time
6. Thorin Oakenshield
7. Bilbo's Choice
8. The Adventure Begins
9. The Battle of Moria
10. Radagast the Brown
11. The Trollshaws
12. Roast Mutton

The Stone Giants might've been exaggerated a bit, but I'm glad they we're included. But I'll talk more about that in your discussion. Wink

Can I have February 7th, please? [In reply to] Can't Post

I really liked the moon runes part in DoS, so I think I can discuss it in AUJ as well. At least nobody stole it from me again. Perhaps somebody was having a Gollum moment (though they probably just didn't know that you had to sign up for it first)? Hopefully, I'll be able to put in some screencaps this time around (I didn't have time last time).Smile

Far over the Misty Mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day
To find our long-forgotten gold.

Hi QoE, nice to see you around. Smile

Yep, the 7th is all yours. Plenty to discuss regarding the moon runes. It'll be neat now, knowing how it fits into DOS.

Thanks, Kim! [In reply to] Can't Post

Looking forward to talking about the cozy home of some very respectable trolls. Tongue

Two more spots left, for anyone still wishing to lead a chapter over the next two months! No requirement to be a fan of Scene 88 (warg chase) or Azog to lead a chapter. Feel free to PM Daniel or myself if you're confused about the format/what to talk about, as well as taking a peek at previous CHOW discussions upthread. Smile

Update: Still two more spots left for January/February!! [In reply to] Can't Post

We still need two volunteers to host CHOW on the weeks of January 24th and February 14th.

Take a look upthread to see where we'll be at in AUJ, and feel free to volunteer! You don't need to have been a participant in previous discussions to lead a chapter. All fresh faces are encouraged to join us. Smile

As always, feel free to PM cats16 or DanielLB if you have any questions about how to lead a chapter.

Meanwhile, stay tuned for this week's CHOW discussion, led by arithmancer, on A Hill of Sorcery.

Smile

Hi cats [In reply to] Can't Post

I can take these chapters if you don't get any other volunteers. If anyone else would like to host, please speak up, keeping in mind that if I host, there will be lots of Thorin pictures and commentary. Wink What's that you say? "But Kim, how can there be Thorin commentary in The Defiler chapter? He's not even in it." Just you wait and see! Laugh

...to see Thorin photo-bombing Azog. Or at least that's the kind of thing I'm half expecting to see. Laugh

Thanks (for about the third or fourth time, although I can't say it enough) Kim, for volunteering. *bows*

Hi there BlackFox! You can definitely have The Defiler. Smile

Feel free to take a look at past discussions for possible questions or formats to use for your post. And, if you have any questions, feel free to send me a PM (I'll send you a reminder a couple of days before, in case you lose track of time).

Thanks for volunteering, and welcome to TORn!
