Turin and Beren's companions [In reply to] Can't Post

Had a tendency to die. All of Beren's ones from Nagrothond did, and Turin had two sets of companions that did not last long, all of his outlaw companions and all of those that set out with him to encounter Glaurung from Brethil.

I think the death of Turin's companions served a different purpose. [In reply to] Can't Post

Personally, I wouldn't call them red-shirts, because I don't think their deaths were used to show that a situation was dangerous and as a way of upping the stakes for the hero. Rather, the high mortality rate of anyone who hung around Turing for too long was a way of showing his curse and the tragedy of the story.
