Elf-friend [In reply to] Can't Post

Lastly, was it written somewhere that people had accidentally found the Straight Road and sailed to the Undying Lands by mistake? Or am I who's mistaken?

In early 'Silmarillion' texts, a mortal called Elfwine had sailed to Tol Eressea somehow, and there recorded the stories of the Elves, translated them into Old English... where I assume some guy named Tolkien later found them and translated these translations into Modern English.

That's an extremely simplified explanation of the external matter of the transmission of the texts [Eriol/Elfwine/ Numenor/Bilbo transmissions] and other related things, but I'm just wondering if maybe you were thinking about Elfwine in general.

He found his way to Eressea, even after the Change of the World [flat to round] had entered Tolkien's imagination, and the concept of Elfwine recording the Elvish stories in Eressea seems to have lingered on past the 'completion' of The Lord of the Rings.

Later Tolkien imagined a new kind of transmission of the tales. Elfwine may have been 'out', Bilbo in, although some seem to think there was still room for an Anglo-Saxon character in the new transmission.

Or something Smile
