Lake-Town Description... [In reply to] Can't Post

I like that the book indicates that Lake-Town existed before Smaug attacked Erebor.

I had been afraid that it was just going to be described as a town comprised of the remnants of Dale.

Hopefully, the film builds on this distinction by suggesting tension between the native Lake-Towners and the previously wealthy residents of Dale that have taken refuge among them.
Lake-Towners may resent Dale refugees for further stressing their already limited resources and infrastructure, and may also blame Dale (in tandem with Erebor) for enticing Smaug to attack by flaunting their wealth during more prosperous times.

Perhaps Lake-Town had stronger economic links with the Elves of Mirkwood, while Dale had more links with the Dwarves of Erebor. Just one way to play things....
