Anybody else notice this about smaug? Can't Post

Months ago when the DOS trailer came out I immediately noticed the similarity between smaug and the mountain banshees in Avatar....i was just too lazy to post about....probably someone has by now. Weta did of course did work in Avatar as well. See the similarities?

I don't remember what the mountain banshees looked like. [In reply to] Can't Post

The image doesn't seem to be working. I guess they're nothing like banshees in Irish folklore, or I'm sure I would've remembered. Unimpressed

I don't see a resemblence, honestly; [In reply to] Can't Post

The ikran have sleek, long heads closely resembling eels with a serpentine flare, as well as a bony beak instead of teeth at the very front. They also have that large crest on the chin, and those, er, long bone projections on the ends of the jaw that fish have (again, eel-like), and a short tongue.

Smaug on the other hand has many more bump, horns and knobbles, thicker scales, more forward-facing eyes, and an overall wider head. He basically looks closest to a spiky, broad megalania. He also has thicker, more mobile lips and a long tongue, widely-set nares and a wider crown area.

Of course his design could change minorly as the CG is polished off-- in the trailer he's clearly not finished and still has some work to be done before the final version of the scene (e.g: no reflection on his scales from his eye gleam, and no smaller light spots). Don't forget our view of his head is distorted in that one scene due to the angle. Tongue

In any case, I loved the design of the ikran (and the toruk) from Avatar, and adore Smaug's design even more. You can definitely tell they're both Weta's handiwork.

There is definitely an similarity [In reply to] Can't Post

with both mouths and stares ...

Ikran Close-up

It definitely has a snake-like/smaugian look, especially the jaw area and where the lower and upper parts meet - not to mention the overall shape of the head, even though one is rough and the other smoother.

Good find Blkcpt! I'm pretty sure WETA have in some ways been inspired by there previous work ...

I always see a pike [In reply to] Can't Post

Perhaps it's because I like go fishing but there is something that remembers me of a northern pike. Especially if you look at Smaugs profile:

Northern Pike

Smaug

Am I the only one to see this?

I was never [In reply to] Can't Post

very impressed with Smaug on this pictures. His head doesn't remind me on mountain banshees from Avatar but rather godzilla from this movie http://theworstmovie.files.wordpress.com/...rick-1998-review.jpg while I was always picturing dragon's head like this one:

Not so much with this [In reply to] Can't Post

Apparently he is capable of devouring a human being. [In reply to] Can't Post

Though this is very rare, and may in fact be a myth…

No similarity... [In reply to] Can't Post

...other than both sporting lizard like features. It's like saying you and me resemble each other, since we are both human.

My theory [In reply to] Can't Post

Is that they chose this mouth design because it will look the most believing when it comes to speech. It's not humanoid or reptilian....it's sort of a mix between the two. Hopefully telepathy won't come into play during this scene as some have suggested.
