AINULINDALË, a parody of The Big Bang Theory TV show theme Can't Post

Those who watch The Big Bang Theory know that those guys love LOTR at least as much as regulars here. And I love that show, especially the episodes that pay tribute to things Middle-Earth, like when they quarreled like four Gollums over the “one Ring (movie prop)”, and when Leonard represented the Shire in the name of love, in full Hobbit costume. To return the favor, I offer here this parody as my tribute to that show.

This parody is my first one that covers subject matter from the Sil, I hope it does justice to the material! Wink It retells, loosely, its first chapter, from whence this parody gets its name:

AINULINDALË (a parody of Barenaked Ladies’ The History of Everything, the theme song for the TV sitcom The Big Bang Theory)

Eru Ilúvatar lived in a timeless state,
Then he created the Ainur to sing his magnum opus. Wait….
The one who had most power,
Melkor, sang his section sour,
Ilúvatar got rather dour,
He sang Eä! (he let the Ainur in).
Melkor, in jealousy, he sought to mar the symphony
That all started with the first word. (BANG!)

“Since the Deeps of Time” is really not that long,
As every element was formed in less time than it takes to sing this song.
A fraction of a second and the stars and land were made.
The Valar took their shape,
And so did Arda’s green landscape,
But Melkor tried to raze and rape
Until its end (Arda outlasted it.)
The battles and catastrophes,
We won’t have seen the last of these,
In motion since the same first word.

It all started with the first WORD! (BANG!)

So the wars went ever onward day by day,
If it paused, would start anew and straight away,
The clash of wills o’er the world, Elves weren’t here yet, none of them heard,
Except from Valar themselves, in Valinor, where they relayed the word.

[keyboard solo]

Eru Ilúvatar might have been really sick of war
Deciding Arda’s worth beyond its birth (that was its crucible.)
Secret fire burning pure (Enemy returning? Sure!)
It all started with the first word!
Music and cacophony, harmony and mutiny,
It all started with the first word!

It all started with the first …..

Word (BANG!)

Source song lyrics:

Devotees of the show will be familiar with the first verse of the source song. The entire song lyrics of Barenaked Ladies’ The History of Everything are here:

Our whole universe was in a hot dense state,
Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started. Wait...
The Earth began to cool,
The autotrophs began to drool,
Neanderthals developed tools,
We built a wall (we built the pyramids),
Math, science, history, unraveling the mysteries,
That all started with the big bang!

"Since the dawn of man" is really not that long,
As every galaxy was formed in less time than it takes to sing this song.
A fraction of a second and the elements were made.
The bipeds stood up straight,
The dinosaurs all met their fate,
They tried to leap but they were late
And they all died (they froze their asses off)
The oceans and Pangea
See ya wouldn't wanna be ya
Set in motion by the same big bang!

It all started with the big BANG!

It's expanding ever outward but one day
It will pause and start to go the other way,
Collapsing ever inward, we won't be here, it won't be heard
Our best and brightest figure that it'll make an even bigger bang!

[keyboard solo]

Australopithecus would really have been sick of us
Debating how we're here, they're catching deer (we're catching viruses)
Religion or astronomy (Descartes or Deuteronomy)
It all started with the big bang!
Music and mythology, Einstein and astrology
It all started with the big bang!

It all started with the big …

BANG!

Very cool especially with all the verses! [In reply to] Can't Post

I love BBT - The Precious Fragmentation makes me smile, and Spouse smirks at me. Until Sheldon talks about trains, and then I get to smirk at him (train geek.)

Is there a Tolkien topic that you have wanted to look into more deeply, and write about your thoughts on it? If so, we'd like to hear from you for the next TORn Amateur Symposium- coming in November. Happy writing!

Thanks ZS! [In reply to] Can't Post

He he! Smile Glad you thought so, I had fun writing it. I was watching a rerun and suddenly I had the urge to parody the theme. Laugh

Thanks Brethil! [In reply to] Can't Post

And that's my favorite episode, naturally! Cool. actually I had never known the verses existed ("What, there's more???"), or that Barenaked Ladies performed the theme ("Ohhh, those guys!!!"), until I started working on this parody. The things I learn! Laugh. A train geek, really, as in model trains? Or as in trainspotting (actual trains)?

Its a great episode! Sheldon does a very nice Gollum doesn't he? [In reply to] Can't Post

Glad you found the other lyrics - and it is such a catchy tune (and your Sil lyrics rock!)

The spouse and son are train geeks on all scales, model and spotting - my son makes train films which have quite a following (?????).

All kinds of geeks make the world go round! Laugh
