My rereading experience [In reply to] Can't Post

I just reread LOTR earlier this year and it was a completely different experience than the first time through. My knowledge of Middle-earth had grown over the years and the book transformed with it. I understood all the allusions to The Silmarillion and the First Age, having read many of Tolkien's other books. I knew how to pronounce the Elvish words and names properly, having studied the pronunciation guide in the appendices. I could picture and hear the characters more clearly now that I have the movies as visual reference. I could also picture the landscape more clearly after playing The Lord of the Rings Online and exploring many of the locales myself.

Basically, I've been immersing myself in Tolkien fandom for years and gaining a greater understanding, knowledge, and appreciation of Middle-earth. That's one of the things that I love about Tolkien's work. He was so meticulous in his world-building that there is always something new to learn, some new detail to absorb that causes you to look at the stories in a different way or get a glimpse of the wider context. It makes Middle-earth feel more real.
