Please help me find a lost website Can't Post

Hi everyone, I'm new here. After reading through some of the posts on this forum it is clear that this community has a vast knowledge of Tolkien's work. My question, however, is in regards to a website that I am having trouble finding. A few years ago as I was reading through the books I found a website that provided detailed maps of virtually any region and location in Middle Earth. The website was set up quite nicely and it was very easy to move from region to region or location to location. Is anyone familiar with this website? Can anyone help me find it? Thanks!

Thanks for the reply [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for your efforts, this is a good map that I have come across during my searches. However, it is not the one I was referring to. The maps I'm looking for are not interactive. They are detailed maps of very small areas of Middle Earth, such as the Dimholt Road and surround areas. Essentially there are individual pages for each location.

For what it's worth... [In reply to] Can't Post

This probably isn't it, but I thought I would put the link here just in case. Or at least something to use in the meantime.

Did you need it for a specific reason? Perhaps we can find an alternative resource?

well, a site I found a decade ago... [In reply to] Can't Post

... and bookmarked, I just checked and it's now gone. I found the pages archived at Internet Archive but not the images.

I'll link you to Internet Archive because, if this looks familiar, you'll at least know it's not online anymore.

fwiw: I think maps of Middle-earth bump up against copyright issues and I know at least one site was served a cease and desist letter from the Tolkien Estate for putting some of Tolkien's maps online. And other sites I found just had scans of published books which is also a copyright infringement.

That was possibly Kyriel's website. [In reply to] Can't Post

She's a long-time member here and had Middle-earth Tours (I think that was its name). She got a letter from the Tolkien Trust (? - I'm having problems with names this morning) telling her she was breaching copyright by providing all of those maps, and I believe she closed it down.

Anyway, you can message Kyriel here via the Your Mesgs button at the top of the page.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauronís master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Nope, the map site wasn't mine [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm not normally on TORN anymore, but from far off in the outer reaches of the Internet, I heard my name. Wink My site was Middle-Earth Tours, as Ataahua indicates - and as Magpie found (snicker) on the Wayback Machine. It had a few maps - which, yes, the Tolkien estate made me take down - but only a few and none that detailed. My focus was art: John Howe, Alan Lee, Ted Naismith, etc. I had a lot of art by Tolkien, and that was the bulk of what the Tolkien estate made me remove.

It sounds to me like the website Metoharo is asking about might have stolen its content from Karen Wynn Fonstad's (truly excellent) book, The Atlas of Middle-earth. If it's maps you're after, Metoharo, that's the best place to find them.

And now I'm again. Thanks for thinking of me, everyone!

The other site I linked to on the Internet Archive [In reply to] Can't Post

http://web.archive.org/.../fantasy/11/maps.htm

were scans from Barbara Strachey's book 'Journeys of Frodo' which is out of print but available second hand.
