Choices [In reply to] Can't Post

I think we have to differentiate between PJ's artistic choices as a director and MF's artistic choices as an actor. Obviously one influences the other and vice-versa, but the kick in the face was not likely Freeman's choice, but Jackson's. It does add a touch of RL to the moment, but it also takes away from the nearly miraculous feat Bilbo performed in the book.

I think Freeman's acting in a lot of places helped to overcome some of Jackson's decisions that I found less than agreeable. I have to say that I do think he truly captured Bilbo's spirit and even appearance perfectly.

I have a personal tendency to "translate" movie into book in my head, so unless I am actually watching the movie at the time, when I think about it, I "see" it in my mind the way it happened in the book. (I very nearly typed "the way it really happened", LOL!) Until I saw it mentioned in this thread I had completely forgotten that kick.
