What does it mean, friends?!

"Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!"

"Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

I have a theory. That soon? Aye, verily. [In reply to] Can't Post

I think it may be possible that (unless they are just posting some of this to frag with us and our thoughts, which is a possibility) that there may be some interaction between Bilbo, The Elves and Gandalf in Dale AFTER Smaug leaves The Mountain, but BEFORE he destroys laketown . . . or at least before the end of the movie, and thus before The Battle of Dol Guldur in which we may surmise that Gandalf's original staff will be broken. The fighting scenes in which there is a new staff may indeed be from the third film.

Other way round, I think. [In reply to] Can't Post

If Smaug has left the Mountain, but hasn't gone to Laketown, then why doesn't he kill the Elves and Gandalf at Dale?

When Laketown is destroyed, perhaps the residents go to Dale (hence shots of humans on the set of Dale). The Elves turn up (to give aid?), and eventually Gandalf.

The Dale scenes are before the BO5A, maybe where the army of men is camped in the siege of Erebor. Bilbo may have gotten the mithril shirt before he hands over the Arkenstone.

This fits [In reply to] Can't Post

Smaug has left for Laketown and been destroyed. During that time Bilbo finds the Arkenstone and the gets the vest. This is before BoT5A takes place, Bilbo having been cast out by Thorin subsequent to BoT5A.

I take your meaning, though when I said before he destroys, I did not mean before he arrives. [In reply to] Can't Post

I was thinking this scene could be happening while he is arriving at lake town. Mainly I am suggesting that it may be before the Dragon himself is felled.

However, you may well be right. If Smaug does indeed fall IN film 2, and the residents begin fleeing to Dale, that could make sense.

But that raises questions about the staff. Unless it is a red herring, why [In reply to] Can't Post

is the staff the same in those scenes, but different in the scene where combat occurs. If it is a legitimate set of shots, it must take place prior to the loss of Gandalf's old staff, which we assume will happen in the seige on Dol Guldur.
