Tolkien Poetry help Can't Post

Hi all!

Sorry if this is the wrong spot but this is in the right group. I am trying to find out where the poem "Over the Misty Mountains Cold" was first published in its complete form. The version in THE HOBBIT book is 10 stanza but there is much more and it is available online. However, I really want to know where it was first (or ever) published.

Anybody know? MrCere@theonering.net

How d'you mean, longer? [In reply to] Can't Post

The poem as sung in Bilbo's house is as it is - that's how it appears in the 1st ed. of TH, and up to today. There are various other versions through the book, as events unfold.

Is this the 'version' on the internet?

- that's no more or less than a compilation of these verses, with 'farewell we call' from FotR. Tolkien never published these verses all together like this.

The person who put this up on the net seems happy to ask for kudos for this - and others seem happy to give it. I really don't see why they should.

Doh! [In reply to] Can't Post

I had forgotten, or never knew, the tale continued. THANKS! There is some strong evidence I need to read the books again. *gulp*

THe "continuation" of the song... [In reply to] Can't Post

The "continuation" of the Misty Mountains song that the Dwarves sing to Thorin while they are under the Mountain is probably better considered a sequel or follow-up to the original song.
