Well spotted! There does seem to be a connection.
And then there's Tom Kitten who actually lost his buttons (though because he was too fat for his clothes) - he "came up the rockery by degrees, breaking the ferns and shedding buttons right and left". Seems Tolkien knew his Beatrix Potter.
