Why build a hall with a roof just high enough that a visiting Elf won't hit his head, when you could instead build it large enough for a dragon to swing a cat in?

Of course, that came back to bite them later...

And you are so right. It would have been amusing if Thranduil couldn't stand upright in Thror's throne room.
