Extended editions [In reply to] Can't Post

Have you seem them before?

"...not till now have I understood the tale of your people and their fall.
As wicked fools I scorned them, but I pity them at last.
For if this is indeed, as the Eldar say, the gift of the One to Men,
it is bitter to receive." -Arwen Undómiel

Ten years [In reply to] Can't Post

Have you been watching the theatricals for the last ten years? Or are you new to the films?

Well, I was seven when the Fellowship came out in theaters. when the movies first came out, I didn't really pay any attention to them, I was more into Monsters Inc and Finding Nemo from Pixar, but fast forward to this April and my older sister introduced me to the Fellowship of the Ring. She and my brother are in their twenties now and have loved the Lord of the rings films since their middle school years. I watched The Two Towers and The Return of the King after I saw that and I can't believe I've waited this long to be a fan. They're amazing movies.

I don't think I've listened to all four though. I should make a point of doing that this summer.

You should pick it up. [In reply to] Can't Post

It's pretty phenomenal. I probably love it more than The Lord of the Rings.

I think The Silmarillion is Tolkien's most beautiful book [In reply to] Can't Post

It's a fantastic read - it's full of drama, there are sorrows to wrench the heart (Beleg...) and beauties to elevate the soul (Luthien...). On the first couple of readings, it does come across as a collection of obscure tales that don't seem to have any particular context or connection with one another. The narrative is *very* different to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

If you're intrigued by the history of Elves, Men, Dwarves and Orcs; and want to find out about the ancient years of Middle-earth involving the the Children of Ilúvatar and Morgoth, then The Silmarillion is definitely for you.

The first read can be very difficult since it is so different to his other books (it really is like a history book, rather than a novel). We would probably all recommend taking notes while you read - all the F and C elves get terribly confusing, and you'll forget which Vala does what. And take is slowly as well, you can't blitz through it!

If you do decide to read it, and if you have any questions, the Reading Room is the place to go.

Smile
