In the book "Gulp" by Mary Roach [In reply to] Can't Post

snake digestion expert Stephen Secor theorizes that the myth of fire-breathing dragons came about when a giant python ate something, then was found by a prehistoric man. The snake couldn't get away (having just eaten a gazelle or an equally big animal) and the man happily bonks it on the head and takes it home. The snake then dies near a fire, and a human steps on it. Hydrogen (from the decomposing snake prey) whooshes out of its mouth and catches light. “The oldest stories of fire-breathing dragons come from Africa and south China,” Roach writes, “where the giant snakes are.”

Not that our boy Smaug is so pedestrian, of course. He's a firedrake, after all. And he probably prefers dwarf to gazelle.

I think it's the Diet, Bomby... [In reply to] Can't Post

Smaug's breath was flaming and smell-ee,
He crammed many Dwarves in his belly.
The point of the tale,
don't eat Dwarves in Mail,
all that iron simply doesn't agree.

Manwe, when asked a simple "Yes" or "No" question, contemplated, and responded "the middle one."

heehee - that is why he is so CRANKY Bomby! [In reply to] Can't Post

Smaug's appetite started so vast -
he ate all the Dwarves in one pass.
Just ask the next day
This is what he'll say
Those Dwarves are a pain in the a** (*giggle*) SmileHeart

(And Dormouse has an excellent point about melting it all - but I'm sure it still cant feel *good* )

Manwe, when asked a simple "Yes" or "No" question, contemplated, and responded "the middle one."
