Ah, that's interesting! [In reply to] Can't Post

How it would play out exactly, I'm not sure. But I like the idea.

Wow! [In reply to] Can't Post

That makes perfect sense. Smaug's greed for the jewel would be his downfall.Shocked

Not the first time that I've seen this idae... [In reply to] Can't Post

However, if you mean that Bilbo actually sees the Arkenstone fall loose from Smaug's breast, unnoticed by the dragon, then that is possibly the best variant of the proposal that I have read. Otherwise, I would leave it as described by Tolkien.

I don't personally agree with that point of view; I might be more inclined to see it as divine intervention from the Valar (or what Bilbo might perceive as pure luck). The Powers That Be have provided an opportunity; it is up to Bilbo (and the thrush, and Bard) to exploit it.

I can imagine a cool shot [In reply to] Can't Post

of the Arkenstone getting dislodged as Smaug leaves Erebor, falling down a pile of gold where Bilbo finds it - maybe lying near a pile of filthy gold that he's been lying on so we really see it's magnificence!

Speculating is so much fun :D
