Have you read The Atlas of Middle Earth? [In reply to] Can't Post

Karen Wynn Fonstad goes some way into explaining the inconsistencies in Tolkien's geography (remember he was a linguist, not a geographer). But even still you can't really explain how you can see a mountain from 250 miles away. I would've preferred it if they had just spotted Mirkwood from a distance and spoken of that as their next destination, thus leading us into film two.

It reminded me of seeing Mordor from Helm's Deep or Osgiliath being such a short ride from Minas Tirith when they're about 10-15 miles apart.

I got my first copy in the late 80s, when i was playing a lot of AD&D. I consult it all the time, but unfortunately it's packed away, or i'd have it out right now.
