Trailer [In reply to] Can't Post

I never really imagined a voice over by Smaug anyway, so that doesn't bother me too bad. I wouldn't mind a short phrase at the tail end of the trailer, though. Maybe over a rehash of his eye opening?

Thanks! I've always loved that picture, and have actually wanted to use it for a while. I'm glad I finally did!

"Now this babe was of greatest beauty; his skin of a shining white and his eyes of a blue surpassing that of the sky in southern lands - bluer than the sapphires of the raiment of Manw; and the envy of Meglin was deep at his birth, but the joy of Turgon and all the people very great indeed." -The Fall of Gondolin

Not just word of mouth [In reply to] Can't Post

Looking at the UK opening weekend numbers, they were huge. And that wasn't because word of mouth it not spread yet. I guess it was a mixture of hype + Adele title song + praised director + James Bond becoming increasingly more popular (when this happened, I can't for the life of me understand. Bond has always been popular all around the world, but never this popular.)

The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.

I'm an old-school Bond fan myself. A bit puzzled as well as to the reception and BO numbers of Skyfall. I agree, perhaps a clever mix of marketing and the Bond mythos. Didn't know it opened so big in the UK, giving it a huge head start in the market.

Do wish I could contribute more to AUJ 's "filling in", but nearest theater is about four hours away and I would have to cross NYC, so no way.

It made 20.1 million in its first weekend [In reply to] Can't Post

For the UK that alone is an incredible amount of money you are right - they certainly got their marketing right for this film. It's even more impressive when you think how big a disappointment QoS was compared to CR.

Skyfall did go on to make a further 80 million pounds after the first weekend so i do think there is a case to be said for word of mouth - it was in my local cinemas until 2 weeks before the hobbit was pulled - clearly people were going back for more.

That is the only thing i can think of - they kept it out there for a long time so it's money racked up but then that only happens if people actually go see the film.

It also has a higher audience rating on RT so who knows, different websites give different values - for me both Casino Royale and Skyfall were great but for different reasons. Definitely will be getting Skyfall when i get a decent blu-ray player.

I really don't know why it was as popular as it was - but then i don't get why Avengers was or Avatar.

On another note - Adele's song always makes me laugh - half the words she can't seem to pronounce! I always hear ' sky foal, crumb bowl' haha. Listen out for it next time you hear the song, lol.

Agreed, it was not just WOM [In reply to] Can't Post

Opening weekends were huge in some parts, much bigger than usual for a Bond movie anyway. I don't get the sudden surge in hype either. Maybe the 50th anniversary helped and just good marketing, i dunno.... Personally, i prefer Casino Royale.

Same with Avengers. The individual superheroes did nothing to write home about, except Iron Man. But throw these B listers all together and suddenly you have a phenomenon.

So it just happened... [In reply to] Can't Post

The Hobbit passed Half-Blood Prince Today on the domestic list.

Why is TH suddenly making more money than last weeks? Last week it made about 20,000 dollars a day during Monday-Friday. Now it's making more than 50,000. What's up with that?

Skyfall: did you notice the hype? [In reply to] Can't Post

Skyfall has been marketed and hyped more than any film in years in the UK. I enjoy film but I don't follow the latest cinema releases and I don't feel I have been able to get away from Skyfall for the last 6 months at least.

The film got decent to good reviews and the marketing machine went into overdrive, hyping the Sam Mendes, Judi Dench, look proper actors, Bond goes all artsy angle to death. I think there must have been an ad for Skyfall every other day in the London Evening Standard for months after release date.

I have seen it and it's OK, felt like a so-so episode of Spooks (MI;5) strecthed out over 2 hours and with a substantially larger budget, obviously Wink.

Expanded to second run theatres. [In reply to] Can't Post

137 more screens added. It had been making more per theatere than many of its large name competitors for some time, but now the most glaring of those have lost screens, and it has gained some, and is making an impressive last run.

Decent to good reviews? [In reply to] Can't Post

It got incredible reviews - ones which PJ would kill for - 92% on RT for all reviews, 90% from top critics. Not that a critical and commercial success means a film is good but it would suggest so. personally i feel like Casino Royale should have made just as much - it's own reviews were just as stellar.

It may be different for London though. Further north where i am there has been no marketing of the film since November when it had posters about and was on buses. Pretty standard amount really but clearly they done a brilliant job!

I think WB should head hunt who ever it was and get them to work on DOS!

Not that i like wall to wall advertising but then it has been a bit of a shambles so far!

2.2 million away from Skyfall [In reply to] Can't Post

domestically. For some reason, i really want this to happen. It just seems wrong to me for James Bond to beat The Hobbit. Those others, i understand, but Bond? Come on!
