I figure their lightning reflexes would be handy when it comes to dodging Big Bad Nasties during my journeys. And, I'd like my hair to stay perfect throughout the day just once in my life.
So it was between Tree-ish and Half-elven, and while I'd normally go with an elf, I decided on the tree. Only if it's an entish tree, though. I'd love to be able to move from place to place, set down roots, and stop for the evening or however long. Plus, what's more incognito than a tree?
But Eagles are stuck-up who withhold their assistance until millions have died, and then they just leave you at the top a tall pillar of rock instead of, I don't know, something more helpful at ground level.
And they'd probably rip a talking purse to shreds if they even come across one.

divine aid is never allowed until after the Hero has fulfilled the quest. If the Valar let the Maiar take care of everything, the free peoples of Middle-earth would expect it and accomplish nothing on their own. Gandalf and the Eagles, all Maiar, had limits placed on them by the Valar. They could help only in specific ways, and whenever they could, they did.
And if that weren't true, I still think the only way to get the Ring to Mount Doom was to sneak it in. If the Eagles had tried a frontal attack, Sauron would probably have defeated them (since part of his sin was rejecting the limits of the Valar) and gotten the Ring back.

The Valar are worse. They're are not only stuck-up , but also an arbitrary, erratic, and capricious lot who can hold a grudge longer than any mortal human male or female I know. The Valar hand off their internal problems with other gods like themselves on an Earth-bound population overwhelmed and ill-equipped for thousands of years and generations of lifetimes because the Valar expect their inferiors to wash their own dirty laundry and restrict that to a few shavings of weak soap. Very helpful. Way to be accountable and take responsibility. One can only assume it's intentional and mean-spirited - literally.
If you're going to take a joke seriously, you really have to expect more of the same.

An Elf for me! They are such marvellous being so if I had the choice, that would be the kind of avatar I should want. Just to experience what it's like to be one and wander in Middle-earth may it be in Rivendell, Lorìen or the Havens!
