Gloin knew that Balin (along with Ori and Oin) had entered Moria, and begun to re-build the city:

"That was nigh on thirty years ago. For a while we had news and it seemed good: messages
reported that Moria had been entered and a great work begun there. Then there was silence, and no
word has ever come from Moria since."

I assume they had guessed their fate, since they hadn't heard anything from them in years. The message they get in the middle of the night might also suggest that Moria had been re-taken by Sauron/Orcs.

Maybe the error is Gimli completely believing the Moria colony was alive and kicking (in the film).
