why? [In reply to] Can't Post

they don't need a Grond for a battle and they are killed before they reach the Erebor gate. And the Erebor gate is broken due to Smaug. I don't see a need.

Sorry to go off topic, but why does Balin say the front of Erebor is sealed shut in the movie? It's been busted wide open.

They might [In reply to] Can't Post

The goblins might drag some equipment there in anticipation of an action where they need some equipment of that sort. Much less sophisticated, perhaps. (..."wheels and engines and explosions always delighted them...etc.") It would be nice to see a few dwarf engines employed, but as was pointed out, it never gets to a siege by the goblins. This is more of a field action with meeting engagements, and assaults on prepared positions.

LOL [In reply to] Can't Post

Actually, I think that a few goblins ought to have a very bad wood and canvas glider with flapping wings -- to try from the mountainside. It fails of course, with a spectacular crash like early gliders. (i.e. paraphrasing here..."down the mountainsides they came, heedless of those that fell screaming from cliff and precipice...") Won't happen, but that would be funny to see. PJ is a huge fan of aircraft. Isn't his next project something to do with WWII bombing? Dambusters or something of that sort...

Not to hijack the thread, but someone (PJ?) needs to do a proper WWI film with aerial aces. All the recent attempts have been failures.

Bats. Why Did it Have to be Bats? [In reply to] Can't Post

Did we read somewhere that there were going to be bats at the BoFA? The goblins could be using the bats as aircraft. Then they could have aerial combat with the eagles. I am not keen on that, but you never know.

Nah [In reply to] Can't Post

No machines... we already saw some devices in goblin town. This is most definitely a field battle that everyone rushes to. No time for building and preparing. Just expect to see some kick butt weapons and armor. As well as some actual butt kicking dwarf action.

I wondered about this, too. [In reply to] Can't Post

I figured I just missed something. It's not like it matters that it is or isn't sealed, either. Even with a burglar, you wouldn't go waltzing in the front door. Smaug would be in the lookout for that.

Tolkien wrote of bat-riding goblins... [In reply to] Can't Post

in The Father Christmas Letters. It's not that much of a stretch to have goblins riding bats at the Bo5A! Though I suspect it'll be orcs more than goblins fighting there, and it's hard to imagine a bat big enough to carry an orc. Possible, yes...PJ's got a penchant for creepy-scary-giant-monster-things!

No massive siege engines and catapult thingies... [In reply to] Can't Post

Whatever you call those monstrosities that the orc armies used at Pelennor. That assault was long-planned by Sauron and he'd been massing forces and equipment for it presumably for quite a long time. The goblins' (or orcs') assault on Erebor was hastily arranged, wasn't it? And (presumably) not planned by a powerful Maia, but just by the goblins themselves. However, with the Necromancer subplot in TH: AUJ, I suppose it could be Sauron himself organizing the goblin/orc assault -- but surely he's not doing so with as much forethought, and certainly not as much power, as he had in LOTR. Surely PJ wouldn't change this so radically? With that said, I know I've read somewhere that PJ said the Bo5A will be the biggest battle we've seen yet -- bigger than the Battle of Pelennor Fields -- so it's supposed to be pretty spectacular!

Richard Armitage said in an interview that the dwarves emerging from Erebor in full armor to engage in the battle is the single most impressive scene in the trilogy (or words to that effect). Can't wait to see that! Even if what comes shortly thereafter is awfully hard to watch...

Lingerie parties, actually. [In reply to] Can't Post

Azog's finally realized his dwarf-face skirt is SOOOO last year, and has decided his minions need to update their wardrobes, too. Not having the best fashion sense, he's subscribed to the latest catalog from Gundabad's Secret. Every evening after the orc scouts return, Azog and company sit around the campfire while Yazneg models the latest fashions in black lace and g-strings. "But wait! Buy 200 of these satin-trimmed, fur-lined, 100% silk nighties and we'll throw in 50 bonus red lace g-strings absolutely free! Guaranteed to make a lasting impression on any foe you meet!"

What about Greek Fire? [In reply to] Can't Post

Did anyone of you played the real-time strategy game Rise and Fall: Civilizations at War?

The ancient Greeks are using a fire raiser that looks like a giant golden lion. The mouth is able to open itself and behind that you've got a giant flamethrower. It isn't an invention of the development team. The ancient Greeks did use such weapons. They used this especially in naval battles to burn the enemy ships down. It is called Greek Fire.

What about Orcs using similiar weapons? Perhaps little brothers of Grond? Machines which look like wolves (connections to the Wargs from Gundabad and Grond from Mordor) and "spit fire"? I know we already have a dragon... but perhaps the Orcs do honor Smaug with building machines which look like him? They could use the dwarven fear of dragons?

Interesting Idea [In reply to] Can't Post

"... but perhaps the Orcs do honor Smaug with building machines which look like him? They could use the dwarven fear of dragons? "

This could be interesting to see. After all, Thorin does not ever get to confront the actual dragon...

Do you think the dwarves will have any machinery? I'm thinking about Dain and his army who come to aid. Will the Iron Hills be represented by more than just heavily armored dwarves?

I'm not too sure about the goblins/orcs riding the bats... this could be a little too far out there, but I guess I wouldn't be surprised if PJ did this.

Will Beorn be the only skin-changer present at Bot5A? In a way I am hoping so. I am especially looking forward to the scene from the book where he carries Thorin off of the battlefield and then returns in an anger-induced hulk-like frenzy. In the book, it actually says that he increases in size and fierceness. Awesome.
