I could just imagine Peter Jackson giving a long-winded explanation to Tolkien about why he made the changes. I can also imagine Tolkien wrinkling his nose and having an annoyed look on his face. Oh PJ, why the skulls...
I think Azog would have had Tolkien twitching. He certainly made me twitch.
In the end, I think no-one can really interpret a work one hundred percent correctly; no-one really knows what goes on in an author's mind.
