Agreed [In reply to] Can't Post

I would also add that quite a bit of humor and detail about the dwarves is added - which I enjoyed greatly!

The last comment is very true. I think it will darken, but I think film 2, at least, will still have a lot of the lighter moments, even though they will be increasingly mixed with the dark of Dol Guldur.

The magnificence of Smaug will be a bright spot, even if he is a dire creature. He's bad news, but he is magnificent, and a hell of a charmer! lol

"Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!"

And that is part of the lighter touch. It was not my main focus in the post, but it definitely was a significant factor, and I am glad you mentioned it. And, while there were a few unfortunate, over the top moments (the troll snot quickly devolved from giggle to gag inducing), much of it was humour in the vein of the novels. Loved Balin's dead pan answer to Bilbo's insincere, terse and perfunctory "I'm Sorry!". . . "Apology accepted." Lmao!
