and that at the moment, Thrain is still alive. Doing it this way then means that when Gandalf returns to the company later and tells Thorin that his father has only recently passed in the dungeons of Dol Guldur, it will add to the tragic nosedive that Thorin's character takes later on in the story and make it more understandable. It will also make the audience more sympathetic to Thorin (who in the book was somewhat unlikeable) and his later disintegration.
