from a geeky point of view, the sauron /smaug relationship is interesting, i guess they are sort of equals?
long lost gang from morgoths days, how old is smaug? would he have been around in the first age!
I think that it is impossible to be certain of Smaug's age one way or the other; however, Gandalf does speak of him as a young(ish) dragon when he attacked and occupied Erebor. That does imply that Tolkien's dragons are capable of reproducing and that Smaug was hatched in the mid-to-late Third Age.
