Today we saw The Hobbit in the 48 HFR, (we found a theater nearby where was showing in that format), and we really enjoyed it. Several film critics did not care for the 48 HRF format because the flatness of the background in some scenes was very evident. I believe they referred to it as soap opera look, where in some cases you can detect that there is a backdrop or props in the foreground. For instance, we have a LCD TV, and I am used to that effect. If I turn the auto motion blur (blurring of faces in action scenes) setting to on, I get the soap opera effect. However, if I set the auto motion blur setting to off, the scenes with sets look real but the action scenes are blurry. We have the setting in between the two to compromise. My point is, unless I make an effort of specifically looking for it, I have gotten used to ignoring the discrepancy. I just wish PJ would go back to using forced perspective in scenes where two characters of different heights (hobbits, dwarves, elves, etc.), are in the same room. From what Ive read, he decided to forgo filming those scenes in favor of using blue or green screens. The bottom line is I enjoyed the HRF format immensely. When the Desolation of Smaug comes out in December, I am torn in which format, 2D or 3D HRF, to see it. Maybe we will see it twice, and flip a coin to let fate decide which format is first.
