It's worth checking out Being Human for Aidan Turner [In reply to] Can't Post

And, well, for the show generally, because it's superb, but for eye-candy it's him, using his own Irish accent (got to love a good accent) and with a quirky fashion sense including tight jeans. Blush Only you really have to start at series 1.

I attended a premiere party [In reply to] Can't Post

while I was in New Zealand. TORN and Red Carpet Tours sponsored the party, and we were thrilled that Peter, Elijah, Andy Serkis, Richard Taylor, Philippa Boyens and several of the dwarf actors attended - NOT Richard Armitage! (Jed Brophy was the master of ceremonies). They were all lovely, but especially the actor-dwarves. Several of them stayed all night and just hung out with us. At one point, I was talking with Peter Hambleton (Gloin) and thanked him for coming. He replied that several of the actors were looking forward to meeting the fans because they had been hearing so many good things about us.

Fan appreciation is a real aphrodisiac!

OTOH, I was in London in the late fall and Billy Connolly was staying at my hotel. He came down to breakfast, but I didn't dare approach him because I had read what he said about Tolkien fans, and was too intimidated (or maybe it's just that he really is physically intimidating--the guy is huge!). I did catch his eye, and he smiled, but my fear of that biting Scottish wit when I blurted "Omigod, you're Dain!" was too much for me to overcome.

"Omigod, you're Dain!"

I think he would have got a kick out of that!

In 2003 or 2004 The Last Samurai was filmed where I live, and it wasn't uncommon to see Billy walking along the city's streets like everyone else. On his arrival here he was meant to go to a house for the first production meeting but got the address wrong and turned up at a random home. It turned out there was a birthday party taking place, so Billy decided to stay!

It must have been that bloke's best birthday ever. :D

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauronís master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

huge? [In reply to] Can't Post

I looked up his height which is apparently around 6 ft. Is it his height or his build you found huge?

I love tall men and my man is 6'2". But he's thin. Or at least, overall, his build is slim. He was skinny when he was young but now he has that old geezer pouch! lol. He's still much more slim than me, though.

not to say Billy is overweight. He clearly isn't. But he may be more substantially built than my Mister.

He has an air of being larger [In reply to] Can't Post

Between the hair and the beard, and the fact that he was in a black t-shirt and black jeans, he just looked big. He also carries himself with an air of confidence, and wasn't trying to go unnoticed (not that he was making a point of who he was, but he wasn't in sunglasses and a baseball cap, the go-to uniform of most celebrities). So yeah, he seemed way bigger than his stats suggest.

I think back on what John Rhys-Davies said to the dwarves in one of the production videos, about women chasing them all over. Seems to be coming true!

If I were RA, however, I might never leave my house. There be stalkers out there...not us, of course. Heck, I can't even say hi to Dain Ironfoot!

ah, that makes sense [In reply to] Can't Post

You explained it well.

I've always thought Billy was an interesting person. I think I'd be more comfortable sitting at a cafe table with a bunch of people and him... watching others interact with him. I fear I couldn't keep up with his wit. He's sharp - in many sense of the word. :-) And I think he's an 'entertainer'... someone who is at his best when entertaining others.

Now Richard, I'd like to have all to myself.

I particularly enjoyed the 'World Tour of Scotland' one. You get a lot of insight into what has shaped him. It's really worth looking at if you haven't seen it.

I'm not sure about how available they are in the States [In reply to] Can't Post

but heaps of it is online, and they are all out on dvd.
He's done Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales, Australia, New Zealand, and I seem to remember a series about him exploring the Arctic as well. I enjoyed all of them, but particularly the one about Scotland. Very interesting man.

there's an interview with him in the extras on the North & South DVD [In reply to] Can't Post

that confirms your impression: he seems humble and very nice. And has a sense of humor.

There's a campaign to get him cast as Matthew [In reply to] Can't Post

In A Discovery of Witches. They even have a website: http://www.armitage4clairmont.com/ (impressive work on somebody's part!)

I'm not sure if he's what I would picture as a vampire, and by the time it gets made (if ever) he will probably have aged out.
