"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Happiness: money matters, but less than we think and not in the way that we think. Family is important and so are friends, while envy is toxic -- and so is excessive thinking. Beaches are optional. Trust is not. Neither is gratitude. - The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner as summarized by Lily Fairbairn. And a bit of the Hobbit reading thrown in never hurts. - NottaSackville

Grand beginnings such as that blank exam paper [In reply to] Can't Post

happened this day molded alone with great devotion by the love of Mabel Tolkien so that one of great worth was nurtured for the world.

Happy Birthday dear professor!.

I have tried to find just one word that could encompass the significance of such a spirit. I believe that the word may be 'profundity '. Profundity in light.

I was looking for a C S. Lewis quote regarding J. R. and i found this which i thought of much value:

'' Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings
A review of J. R. R. Tolkien's famous work in On Stories and Other Essays on Literature (1982) edited by Walter Hooper
'But why,' (some ask), 'why, if you have a serious comment to make on the real life of men, must you do it by talking about a phantasmagoric never-never land of your own?' Because, I take it, one of the main things the author wants to say is that the real life of men is of that mythical and heroic quality. One can see the principle at work in his characterization. Much that in a realistic work would be done by 'character delineation' is here done simply by making the character an elf, a dwarf, or a hobbit. The imagined beings have their insides on the outside; they are visible souls. And man as a whole, Man pitted against the universe, have we seen him at all till we see that he is like a hero in a fairy tale?
p. 89
The Value of myth is that it takes all the things you know and restores to them the rich significance which has been hidden by the veil of familiarity.
p. 90
We do not retreat from reality, we rediscover it. As long as the story lingers in our mind, the real things are more themselves... By dipping them in myth we see them more clearly. ''

[I submitted this 3 years ago but perhaps it can suffice to be seen again]

Also this from our own Tehanu:

"Light, air and water: three simple things we all need to live. Tolkien made the these common things into symbols and messages of hope. Throughout all his work, air, light and water are subtle forces that encourage and guide the inhabitants of Middle-earth who are paying attention.
It's nice to look out the window at the rain and think of it as more than an annoying wetness. It's much better to see it as Tolkein wanted us to see it: as a sign of life and regeneration. The awareness of beauty and meaning in simple things is one of the great gifts Tolkien gave us to carry around in the everyday world. And so i walk out to the creek and listen with pleasure to its great roar."
Message and Meaning - 'Secret Messengers' Page 36-37 'More People's Guide to J.R.R. Tolkien'.

How about a word from our Quickbeam?

"The Professor's aim was to very finely and discreetly put spiritual idea, layer by cautious layer, into the work. Some of the Angelic Powers are there, hovering in the background of the tapestry. Many of the main characters never see them, nor care to notice. Samwise comes quite close to his own spiritual epiphany though he does not recognize what it is, when he looks up from the waste of Gorgoroth and sees the solitary star above him."
Message and Meaning, -'The Sacred and the Profane'page 56-57.
