Red, Red Wine Can't Post

I've seen AUJ three times now and there is one part I can't quite decide what Gandalf is thinking.

When given the wine Dori reviews as rather fruity, Gandalf drains the glass and looks very disappointed.

Is he displeased at the quality or sad the glass was so small?

'There is some woe that lies upon you... Why will you not tell me more?'
'For that woe is past,' said Galadriel; 'and I would take what joy is here left, untroubled by memory. And maybe there is woe enough yet to come, thought still hope may seem bright.'

Perhaps a little of both? [In reply to] Can't Post

Although I thought it was because the glass was too small--he gives it a look after its emptied and then looks disappointed.

" Well well!", said a voice. "Just look! Bilbo the hobbit on a pony, my dear! Isn't it delicious!"
"Most astonishing wonderful!"

I also think Gandalf wished he had a bigger glass... [In reply to] Can't Post

and I love Dori's original offer of chamomille teaSmile

He looks genuinely bummed that Gandalf didn't accept his offerLaugh

The bottle? [In reply to] Can't Post

I originally thought size of the glass, but he never asked Dori for the rest of the bottle.

'There is some woe that lies upon you... Why will you not tell me more?'
'For that woe is past,' said Galadriel; 'and I would take what joy is here left, untroubled by memory. And maybe there is woe enough yet to come, thought still hope may seem bright.'

He's sad the glass was so small. Hobbit-sized.

Nod to FOTR... [In reply to] Can't Post

This scene is a brief nod to FOTR where when Gandalf visits Bilbo in that, Gandalf say's "Tea, just tea please" when Bilbo is offering to cook up something for him.

In the Hobbit he takes the wine, in FOTR he takes the tea :)

Perhaps the wine wasn't that great. We never got to see Dori react to the wine did we? He had two glasses, but we only get to see Gandalf drink and react. If the wine was not good, it'd a nice to see Dori react to it as well. He and Gandalf take a drink and give each other a look. Maybe something to hope for in the EE.

Like Daniel said.... [In reply to] Can't Post

that's a great observation ! And I very well think it was a deliberate nod to FOTR ( like Gandalf bumping his head on the chandelier ) , but it does happen in the book almost verbatim, it just isn't Dori in the book, but a general reply from Gandalf...

" Quite a merry gathering ! I hope there is something left for the late-comers to eat and drink ! What's that ? Tea ! No thank you ! A little red wine, I think for me. "

Red Whine [In reply to] Can't Post

My thought exactly. Maybe Sir Ian will tell us in the DVD/BD commentary?
