Shifting Lines - Redux Can't Post

In LOTR there was an established pattern of lines from the book being moved around in the timeline, or pieces or lines from different characters being given to other characters. I think it will be fun to find those in this and the next films.

There's already been one in the movie: "I can't just go running off into the Blue..." by Bilbo.. is partly from Lord of the Rings, but wasn't a spoken line, it was narrative.

I wonder how some of the 'key lines' will be modified or moved, and how people will react if their favorite snippet is given to someone else or used at a different time. None of it bothered me in LOTR, as it was using source material to make the story work where it needed help. I need to see the Hobbit again, and take some notes, but those on their third or fourth view will no doubt have some to note for us?

Since it has just turned 2013 ... [In reply to] Can't Post

My first 2013 post has to mention the purse! Can we have Thranduil squeal: "Ere! Oo are you?" to the Company of Dwarves please?

And tell me, what's it like in the future!? ShockedBlush

There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall and the bells in the steeple, too.
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird is popping out to say coo-coo (coo-coo, coo-coo).

Morlocks control us all, and the Mayans have just left in a spaceship. By prepared!

Back on topic, one of my (other) favourite lines in The Hobbit is said by Thorin in the Misty Mountains:

Quote
If we don't get blown off or drowned, or struck by lightning, we shall be picked up by some giant and kicked sky-high for a football.

I wonder if they could re-work it for Mirkwood?

The Mayans were here this whole time!? [In reply to] Can't Post

Shocked

No, I don't really see that happening anywhere in Mirkwood. Perhaps they could use it for when they're climbing the Lonely Mountain, though.

Thorin - "Out of the frying-pan..." Gandalf - "and into the fire!" [In reply to] Can't Post

Which in a roundabout way can be attributed to Bilbo:

"What shall we do. What shall we do!," he cried, "Escaping Goblins to be caught by wolves!" he said, and it became a proverb, though we now say "out of the frying-pan and into the fire" in the same sort of uncomfortable situations.

Moon-letters.... [In reply to] Can't Post

In the original passage Thorin describes Durin's Day to Elrond.

"...when the last moon of Autumn and the sun are in the sky together."

In the movie, Gandalf describes it.

"Caves in the mountain are seldom unoccupied." [In reply to] Can't Post

Thorin says this in the movie, but in the book, Gandalf thinks this without actually saying it aloud.

Arguably, this inspired an action sequence in the film... ;)

Something like:

If we don't get lost or drowned, or struck by stags, we shall be picked up by some giant spider kicked sky-high for a football.

Whenever I read that line in the Hobbit I loved to envision a giant punting Thorin across the valley. I just like to interpret it as American football, however incorrect it may be. Laugh
