"The Way of Kings" is a pretty recent book by Brandon Sanderson. The entire world is evocative and the characters are strong. There are so many elements in the book that I haven't read about in any other fantasy series. Like LOTR, you get so attached to the characters that you root for them...well, I do that. They only problem is that it's over a thousand pages in a series of ten(the other nine haven't even been released yet). Not exactly movie material.
