I find it ironic that you would use that screen name, tolkienreborn, and yet rant about the Professor's religion. He'd probably roll over in his grave if he saw that. I myself am not Christian and have my share of issues with organized religion, believe me. But I don't deny that it was very important to Tolkien and a strong influence on his work.

His approach to it is one of the reasons I've always preferred Tolkien over C.S. Lewis. He doesn't hit you over the head with religious allegory. The elements are there, informing the story below the surface. If you share his faith, you can derive enjoyment from those elements. If you don't, you can just revel in a beautifully crafted fantasy world.

The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are pretty subtle in their Christian themes (it's more overt in The Silmarillion) but the influence can definitely be seen in Tolkien's ideas of good vs. evil and the sense of fate or a higher power intervening at times.
