Smaug dragon kite Can't Post

Hi all

New to this forum, but far from new to Tolkien and PJ's movies!

Got a rather unusual (?) question: at the start of the first Hobbit movie, a dragon kite is briefly seen flying. Does anyone know whether this dragon kite is sold somewhere or whether plans exist to build it? Reason I ask is that I am a keen kite-flyer, with (limited) experience in building kites. So I'd love to buy/build this Smaug kite and fly it!

Cheers, Lex

I was in Dale the other day... [In reply to] Can't Post

And they had them for sale for only a buck a piece!

Seriously though, I'm sure you could find a kite that is similar to that one. But I highly doubt there are any plans in place to market and sell the one in the film. I'm sure you could make one that is even better though!

I would try to make one myself, but the kite was only seen for a few seconds, so I didn't really have the time to see details.

Anyone know of a picture of the entire kite? Or a piece of video footage which shows the kite in full?

I'm only guessing ... [In reply to] Can't Post

It was probably CGI. There's nothing in the Hobbit chronicles book that might indicate they made it.

As I've understood, the people at WETA prefer to make a physical model as a concept of every item and creature they then convert to CGI and work out the rest from there. That ofcorse doesn't necessarily mean that they made an entire kite, let alone a working one; they may have just made the flat surfaces without attaching them together, or something.

Me too! [In reply to] Can't Post

I want to try making one!

I haven't put much thought into it but since my flatmate is currently making a Halo ODST helmet from card using pepakura, I thought that might be one place to start. I just have no idea whether it would actually fly or not if it was constructed with that. (Pepakura is a software program that converts 3D models into foldable templates, which you can then print).

Once my other summer projects are done, I'd really like to try making one!

Oh I love that kite too... [In reply to] Can't Post

... I also liked the green turtle one. And there was also a third one (a blue one) that I couldn't quite figure out. I wish they'd make these. The toy market of Dale sure must've been a lovely place.

You might ask if the Hobbit Artisan Market in New Zealand had any of these for sale.

There was ... [In reply to] Can't Post

A dragon, a turtle, and I think the 3rd was a bird (maybe a heron-like bird?)

Ah, a bird huh? [In reply to] Can't Post

I've watched the movie twice and couldn't make it out. I'll probably be squeezing in a third viewing before I resume work in the new year, so I'll keep "bird shape" in mind when that scene comes around Smile

Footage floating around on a certain video site shows it is a bird.
