Well, we've already got one Wilhelm scream... Can't Post

Boy I wish this Wilhelm joke would die. Everytime I hear it it takes me right out of the movie. It doesn't even make sense for a goblin to make that noise.

Why would they put something like that into these films? No wonder the Tolkien family view these films as jokes.

I'm to engrossed in the film to care about a little scream. There's more important things I probably won't like.

There's a wilhelm scream in every LOTR movie [In reply to] Can't Post

Although they are less obvious. This one is a little too much.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle.

PJ didn't know about Wilhelm screams until TTT [In reply to] Can't Post

That is why it was absent in FOTR, I have heard that ROTK has like three to make it up for it.

I detest this sound effect with a passion not solely because of how ubiquitous it is in movies but because it sounds very unrealistic and contrived.

It is really the worst form of homage or easter egg, however apparently some people enjoy it.

But that seems to be the nature of the boards. Everyone's got their nitpicks, it's all good. Wink

Arthur: What manner of man are you that can summon up fire without flint or tinder?
Tim: I... am an enchanter.
Arthur: By what name are you known?
Tim: There are some who call me... 'Tim'...?
Arthur: ...greetings, Tim the Enchanter.

I think I love such humor to much to hate that a goblin makes that sound!

what exactly is a Wilhelm scream?

Thanks!

Frito groaned. "I wish I had never been born," he said.
"Do not say that, dear Frito," cried Orlon. "It was a happy minute for us all when you were born."

Go to wikipedia and type in Wilhelm Scream. It even has an audio sample. Once you know what it sounds like, you'll notice it every time.

Judging from the above hand-wringing you may want to skip [In reply to] Can't Post

the audio clip so you are blissfully unaware of the characteristic "Hey - I'm falling to my death!" Wilhelm scream. Read about it but don't listen. Remain a Wilhelm virgin to avoid disappointment.

I don't agree with all the fuss since I'm fairly certain none of the Hobbit characters ever existed in RL anyway. Just what, exactly, should they sound like?

To me, recognizing the Wilhelm scream in a movie is like recognizing the Hitchcock or Stan Lee cameos in their respective films.

Ah hah, got it. Thanks! [In reply to] Can't Post

Read it, listened to it, and heard it at least once in the clip. At first I thought it was referring to Dwalin's bellow as he charges the goblins with a makeshift lance.

Frito groaned. "I wish I had never been born," he said.
"Do not say that, dear Frito," cried Orlon. "It was a happy minute for us all when you were born."

The Wilhelm Scream is the Rebel Yell of the Geek. It's the film directors' big middle-finger punk rock STFU to every film critic snob who doesn't "get" it.
