Two things [In reply to] Can't Post

One: People in the mid-western part of the US often do the same. I had a boss who was from the Northeast, and she always laughed at us for pronouncing pin and pen the same way.

Two: Are all kiwi men that cute??? If so, I'm packing my bags! Wink

Sounds awfully familiar [In reply to] Can't Post

Only I've never been to New Zealand. It's certainly not only Kiwis who do not grasp the concept of the letter "r".

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauronís master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

The non-rhotic Boston accent [In reply to] Can't Post

Here's a fun link from Car Talk, a popular radio show broadcast from National Public Radio here in the US. Yes, Click and Clack - I could see their garage from the windows of my lab when I worked at another company in Cambridge.

You Know You're From Boston When...

There's also variation in the oft-imitated, seldom reproduced (accurately) Boston accent according to neighborhood and class, although less so now than in the past. That is, a Bostonian from Southie would have a different accent than a Boston Brahmin from Back Bay.

My accent remains that of the Midwestern US variety, but when I return to Illinois, I'm told my "r's" are now slightly softened, and I have been know to say "Hahwahya?" instead of "How are you?" so I guess Boston is rubbing off on me. Wink

Wouldn't that be "bahwt a tonic?" Wink

A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature. It is Earth's eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature. ~~ Henry David Thoreau
