She's lovely! [In reply to] Can't Post

A strange way to describe a whale, but she seems almost mystical, being pure white.

And much friendlier than Moby. Smile

I had exactly the same reaction. [In reply to] Can't Post

Not at all what I expected--such grace! What a lucky set of people on that ship.

Yes, mystical! I saw an animal like that once - [In reply to] Can't Post

many years ago, not long after we first moved to our house. We were standing in our kitchen area in the evening and I looked through the sliding glass doors to see this absolutely huge, absolutely beautiful, pure white dog bound out of the woods and over the railing and right onto our deck. It looked like an arctic wolf, only much larger. And I mean, *large*. If you can picture a super sized, pure white arctic wolf, that's what it looked like. I actually thought for a few seconds, that I was having a vision. But my husband was there and he saw it too.
But it wasn't wild looking or fierce at all, it was just trotting around on our deck, so we went outside. We were cautious, but it was really quite friendly. It stayed with us for a few minutes, even let us pet that thick white fur a bit. And I saw, up in the woods, that it had a little buddy, a smaller dog, following it around.
And then after those few magical moments with us, it bounded over the railing and back into the woods, its little friend following behind it, and it was gone. We never saw it again.
The rational part of my brain knows it was an actual creature, but there is a part of me that just can't figure it out. It was so mysterious, so strange and fleeting. I'll never forget it!

sounds like a Pyr! [In reply to] Can't Post

Great Pyrenees. Wonderful dogs. HUGE, but totally sweet.

Those are wonderful dogs [In reply to] Can't Post

This one though, had pointed ears. It looked basically like a large wolf, in pure white. It's puzzling!

there is also [In reply to] Can't Post

the white German shepherd,a/k/a the Berger Blanc Suiss, They tend to be bigger than other shepherd breeds.

And of course, someone in the neighborhood may in fact have a part-wolf white dog!

heh [In reply to] Can't Post

I spent quite a bit of time reading about them myself, and found myself wanting one! Of course I think shepherds rule anyway, having had the great good fortune to grow up with one and get to live with another one for 14 years. And I hear the whites are very mellow fellows.

Possibly it was a mixed arctic wolf [In reply to] Can't Post

If so, it inherited the gentleness of the shepherd and the looks of the wolf :). It had the large overall size of that type of shepherd, but the ears were smaller. Pointed, but smaller.
I really have always kept an eye out since then for that type of dog anywhere, and in all the photos and breeds I've looked at, I've just never seen one like it. No one in the neighborhood has it, but I recall that we saw it in the fall around the holidays, so we assume someone was visiting and apparently let it out for a run (?!). I imagine whoever owns it must know how unique it is too, but I'm sure they know no one is going to try to tangle with a dog like that :-).

Close but not quite [In reply to] Can't Post

Similar ... overall large size, but probably larger, and bulkier and the ears were smaller.

I'm not surprised it's piqued your interest too :-) - I know you love a good mystery to research too, lol. I've always been on the lookout for a dog like that ever since, but have never found one similar.

I have read that people do raise and mix arctic wolves, and from photos I've seen it looked most like an arctic wolf, only it was larger, so I'm leaning towards that it was an arctic wolf mix with perhaps one of these larger shepherds like the ones you and Annael have pictured. That would make sense, as it also had a friendly, mellow temperament.
