when the initial outlay is relatively low (Star Wars for example).

When it gets expensive, it's more often a flop (Heaven's Gate, Ishtar, Waterworld, Golden Compass), that leaves the studios facing liquidation, rather than apologising.

As often as not, visionaries just turn money into less money.
