Something I noticed... Can't Post

In each of the LOTR films, the title of the movie is quoted directly in the dialogue.

In FOTR, Elrond says to the Council: "You shall be THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING." In the same film, Gandalf says to Saruman: "There is only one LORD OF THE RING, Saruman. Only one who can bend it to his will. And he does not share power."

In TTT, Saruman says to Sauron through the Palantir: "Who can stand against the union of THE TWO TOWERS?"

In ROTK Gandalf says to Denethor: "Authority is not given to you to deny THE RETURN OF THE KING, Steward!"

So I wonder... will the Title and Subtitles of The Hobbit (An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, There and Back Again) be quoted in a similar manner? If so, in what context? By which characters?

We've already heard Thorin say in the second trailer: "So this is THE HOBBIT."

So that's one down.....

The Grey Pilgrim, they once called me. Three hundred lives of men I walked this earth, and now I have no time...

I noticed that too! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hope they carry on the 'tradition'... that'd be very cool Wink
(Hopefully when we least expect it too)

We already got a little of it... [In reply to] Can't Post

... in ROTK when Frodo finishes his story Sam says "THERE AND BACK AGAIN a Hobbits tale by Bilbo Baggins and THE LORD OF THE RINGS by Frodo Baggins". There we've got the title of the third film and I'm pretty sure that we'll hear and read it in the end of TABA when Bilbo finishes his story.

The title of film two is defenitely in the second movie. THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG is the name of the area between Mirkwood, Long Lake and Erebor. I'm certain we'll hear someone calling it by name. It will also appear on several maps (especially on the Erebor-Map) as it did in FOTR.

AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY is the most difficult one I think... But perhaps someone is going to say something like: "That really is an unexpected journey my friend" or when Old Bilbo starts his story "My dear Frodo... it really started as an unexpected journey".

We'll see... but I'm sure that all titles are going to appear during the trilogy ;-)

Bilbo also says it at the very beginning of the FOTR. [In reply to] Can't Post

When you're taking a sledgehammer to the fourth wall like that... [In reply to] Can't Post

...you might as well throw in a gurning George Lazenby in a prosthetic nose saying "This never happened to the other fellow(ship)" for good measure.

I'd expect nothing less from Sir Peter "look at my kids! look at them!" Jackson. Hey, let's chuck in a Wilhelm or two.

Also... chapter titles [In reply to] Can't Post

Each part of LOTR had several dialogue quotes of chapter titles from the books (for instance "A Shortcut to Mushrooms", "The Bridge of Khazad-Dm" etc.).
I wonder if this will be kept for the Hobbit films.

This was mostly rather cheesily done [In reply to] Can't Post

Particularly "You shall be the FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING!" Now, say cheese!

No need to repeat this tradition, as it adds nothing, and feels forced.

Exactly my thought. The demolition of the fourth wall is one of the many reasons I dislike PJ's style.

I kind of agree [In reply to] Can't Post

that the inclusion of the titles feels forced and cheesy (as if we didn't know to whom/what they're referring!). At the same time, I like that Peter has a sometimes playful style in that regard because I'm not of the mindset that Tolkien needs to be interpreted like a serious, religious text 100% of the time. Peter's brand of humor isn't always successful, but I think a certain self-awareness that this IS fantasy is occasionally needed in a story like this. Certainly not all the time, but occasionally since there are some pretty ridiculous situations. Even with the things Peter put in LOTR, there are plenty of people who already find the three films to take themselves far too seriously.

Is it possible the studio influenced that? [In reply to] Can't Post

The first one - The Fellowship of the Ring - might have felt forced/cheesy.

But the second one - I can believe that lots of people seeing the movies, esp. w/o having read the books, might have wondered about The Two Towers. Even in the Tolkien community there seems to be much debate (or at least discussion) about which two towers Tolkien meant. I would not be surprised if the studio execs sorta requested, even insisted?, that some reference be made...? (...even if it wasn't the correct towers)

And of course with two down, perhaps the pattern was then too irresistible to pass up?

Btw, I'm ok with it - even liked that PJ did it. Smile
