What do you think of this rather sudden emergence of a hero in this chapter? Too sudden. I would have liked a bit of introduction to a "grim" character back when the dwarves and Bilbo were being hosted by the townspeople. Even just a line or two, mentioning a character who has the feeling that no good will come of this. Then when he appears in this chapter, we can be thinking "Him again - now what's he got to do with all this?". But the way he appears here, it feels too close to being a deus ex machina.
