I think there is around the same amount of stuff as when lotr was released. [In reply to] Can't Post

Though that could be because back then i wanted most of the stuff where as now i dont care.

Personally i feel like - does it really matter. No one is forcing you to buy any of it - if you dont like it, dont buy it, if you do then great go for it.

It is obviously a cash cow as are most in franchises/sequels of successful movies. Its a tried and tested formula which they are hoping they can predict fairly accurately how much money they will make.

With the budget over $500 million they are pretty certain it is going to be a mega hit.

It is also going to be aimed more at children i think (should be) and kids buy loads of naff merch. It's just good business and would happen which ever studio was in control.

you guys [In reply to] Can't Post

are forgetting that The Hobbit is a product just like anything else.

I hold it near and dear, but that little book ain't going anywhere. You can ignore everything else if you really want to, no one is forcing you to buy all this stuff.

If you feel like endless merchandising is tarnishing Tolkien's name or something like that, well that's really a shame. Unsure

His words will outlive any happy meal toy, that's the only thing that matters.

We are, but in a good way (IMO) [In reply to] Can't Post

There was also tons of money made from merchandising in the LOTR films, and goodness knows plenty of it was mine.

I loved the movies and the music, loved the books more, and also really enjoyed all the hype, merchandise, plastic toys, happy meal swag and the video games, posters, and special editions of the books and other related material.

I know Tolkien would diapprove but I just can help it. Every little Middle Earth related figure, drawing or sketch just draws me in. I guess I'm just a hopeless product of my materialistic generation.Crazy

Of course it's about marketing and profits :) [In reply to] Can't Post

WB came forward and gave Jackson what he needed to get these films made... from 2 to 3!! Of course they do it for the money... that's the purpose of their business. To make films and make money.

I don't care how many action figures, calendars, t-shirts, or versions of the films they market as long as it has given us Peter Jackson's telling of Tolkien's story AND made it possible for Jackson to fulfill his dedication to finish the series of films. He's been wanting to make The Hobbit since they were still in the process of filming LotR. It took years... YEARS of believing and persevering to accomplish this. Peter is a fan of Tolkien's stories, and he believes in us... the fans... and knows what this means to us. He has overcome so much to make these films... for all of us.

The Hobbit in 3 films would never have happened without the inevitability of commercialism, the promise of profit, and a 6" tall action figure. I say bring them on! Gimmie the toys... gimmie the posters... gimmie the theatre tickets that are way over-priced. I'll take it all on if they gimmie Jackson's Hobbit so I can see Gandalf the Grey and my beloved Bag End one more time.

We are so lucky...

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

thing is going from 2 films to 3 [In reply to] Can't Post

how much more money do they really need for a few months of shooting? Compared to the profit margin that WB expects to rake in from each film. Going from 2 films to 3 raises the money revenue by 1/3.... I'm sure the amount they shell out is merely a drop in the bucket in comparison. And who's idea was it really to split the films into 3 from 2? Sounds more like a WB thing than Peter Jackson IMO. And since none of us were a fly on the wall in those meetings we have simply to rely on their word about who wanted what. I'm hoping for longer films but something is telling me we are going to get films just at or just over 2 hours in length with EE somewhere between 2 and 1/2 and 2:45. Which is where I honestly hoped the theatrical version would be. I'm not a fan of all the mass market profit making mentality but fact is that's part of today's society. How much junk can they use to promote something, for good or bad

Thoroughly! But is that a bad thing? Do you know what happens to a cow that isn't milked? Enjoy it, it'll all be over before you know it.

Well there's two issues for me... [In reply to] Can't Post

First is the question of stretching the story over 3 films. Fine if it allows a more lovingly detailed story to be told. Potentially disappointing if we have a ton of invented scenes or altered story arcs to flesh them out.

Second is whether the film drives the merchandise or the merchandising drives the film. Are decisions made to make a better film or will they be made to sell more stuff? Will we see minor footnote characters elevated to centre stage or worse still have characters invented for the purpose of selling toys?

Wacky merch [In reply to] Can't Post

When discussions like this come up, I like to remember that perhaps the perhaps most "milked" artisitc franchise in modern history was probably The Beatles in 1964. I will not go into the details, but if you think Star Wars invented the modern franchise business, remember the Beatles coming to the US. Truly, it still puts SW to shame.
(Of course, The Boys had no control over this. They had no control over anything at that early stage.)

The other day in OT a couple of us were talking about wacky tie-in merch (the "24601" T-shirts already on sale for Les Miz film?!?) .My all-time favorite tie-in product HAS to be Beatlenut ice cream.

That's right: say it again: The Beatles. Ice cream. Crazy
What flavor was it, I wonder?

I sometimes wonder if everything The Beatles later became was in rebellion against this...
